Boise, ID -- 02/23/2022 -- Boise School District's Fairmont Junior High School has once again earned recognition as a National Demonstration School by AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a nonprofit organization that provides educators with proven, real-world strategies to accelerate the performance of underrepresented students.
The AVID System of College & Career Readiness is a proven nationally recognized college readiness system that uses research-based strategies and curriculum to help close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college, career and life.
AVID is in its 16th year of implementation in the Boise School District as an elective and is in all of the District's 13 secondary schools as well as 2 elementary sites, with Fairmont serving as an AVID National Demonstration School. Fairmont is one of only 216 AVID National Demonstration Schools across the nation and one of only two in Idaho.
"We are extremely proud of once again earning the AVID National Demonstration School distinction for Fairmont Junior High School that shows the commitment we have to college readiness for all students at both school and district levels," said Coby Dennis, Superintendent, Boise School District.
"While many talk about what should be done to prepare students for college, AVID is doing it and has been for more than 16 years in the Boise School District."
Chris Ryan, Fairmont's principal, is pleased that his school has once again earned the distinction of being an AVID National Demonstration School, noting the impact of the AVID system on staff and students. “It is a tremendous honor to be selected as a National Demo Site, and we are proud of our AVID system and our school as a whole,” said Principal Ryan. “The use of AVID strategies school-wide has positively impacted our students and staff, and we continue to see a more engaged and college-ready student body.”
AVID Chief Executive Officer Sandy Husk, PhD, notes the significance of attaining Demonstration Site recognition. “Schools recognized as National Demonstration Sites have proven their ability to successfully implement the AVID Elective course and take the strategies school-wide to impact all students,” says Dr. Husk. “Fairmont was selected as an AVID National Demonstration School because it has implemented the AVID system throughout the school and can serve as a model for new AVID sites.”
