Winter Weather Procedures: Keeping Safety First | |
When winter weather strikes, Boise School District is prepared to prioritize student safety in all conditions. Our goal is to ensure that students can safely travel to school, whether by bus, on foot, or by bicycle, and that our schools can operate without risk. Education is important, and every school day counts, but when citywide weather conditions pose a danger, school may be canceled for the day.
We aim to make closure decisions by 5:30 a.m. to provide timely updates. However, please note that school will not close for typical winter conditions such as light snowfall, cold temperatures, or isolated ice patches. With proper winter precautions, our students can travel safely under these conditions.
Our District covers over 450 square miles, so weather conditions can vary significantly. Parents who feel that travel is unsafe in their area are encouraged to keep their children home. If school closures are necessary, they will apply to the entire District, including Boise Online School.
Winter driving can be challenging for drivers of all ages, but especially for high school students who are new to driving. With this in mind, review these safe winter driving tips to help you navigate winter weather.

| Boise Schools Introduce Share Tables to Reduce Food Waste and Support Students |
Boise School District has introduced "Share Tables" in school cafeterias to reduce food waste and foster a supportive meal environment. Students are encouraged to place unopened and uneaten food items they don’t plan to eat on the designated Share Table. This allows other students who may want or need additional food to pick up these items instead of letting them go to waste.
The program is designed to promote mindful consumption, encouraging students to consider the impact of discarded food and make it available to others who might benefit. By using Share Tables, Boise School District aims to address food waste and provide a small yet meaningful resource for students facing food insecurity. This initiative offers a simple, community-oriented solution that benefits both students and the environment. Watch the following video to learn more.
| District Fall 2024 Powerdown Challenge | |
Boise School District is committed to using resources as sustainably as possible. We saved 737 megawatt-hours of electricity last year during the four weeks of combined breaks, compared to energy usage in the week prior. As we enter Autumn break (November 25-29), we know we can improve upon that energy savings, if our students and staff work carefully to unplug during next week's break. We know staff and student computers, including teacher computers and laptop carts, can all be safely unplugged during breaks. With that in mind, we urge our school's Green Ambassadors to please accept this Fall Powerdown Challenge and help your teachers, librarians, and school staff fully power down before heading out on Friday, November 22, 2024. Teachers and students, before we leave the buildings for the upcoming break, please use this online form to report out about your participation in our Fall Powerdown Challenge.
| Honoring Veterans Day 2024: A Special Event at Shadow Hills Elementary | |
In celebration of Veterans Day 2024, Shadow Hills Elementary School in Boise welcomed the Idaho National Guard for a truly memorable event! Throughout the visit, students had the opportunity to meet the National Guard crew, ask insightful questions, and gain a deeper understanding of the dedication and service of these remarkable individuals. This interactive experience was designed to highlight the importance of Veterans Day and instill a sense of gratitude and respect for those who serve in the armed forces.
We extend a special thank you to the Idaho Air National Guard, Principal Amy Pinkerman, and music specialist Mrs. Gina Spengler for creating this inspiring experience for our students and the Boise community. Kelly Richmond, a U.S. History teacher and Instructional Lead at North Junior High, has been selected as one of only 20 educators, librarians, and museum professionals from across the country to participate in the Smithsonian's prestigious Democracy in Dialogue Virtual Exchange Program. This unique initiative brings together leaders in education to develop resources and projects that will contribute to the Smithsonian’s collection, marking America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Richmond joins three other Idaho educators, highlighting Idaho’s prominent role in this national project.
As part of this program, Richmond is guiding 20 talented students from North Junior High and Boise High in researching Boise’s rich history and creating video projects that will become part of the Smithsonian’s permanent collection. These students’ videos, set to be featured in the 2026 celebration, will showcase Boise’s unique contributions to American history, giving them the rare opportunity to leave a lasting impact on our nation's historical record.
Richmond's journey with the program began this summer with a week-long immersive experience in Washington, D.C., where she, along with her fellow educators, explored the Smithsonian’s museums, gained insights into the storytelling of American democracy, and gathered inspiration to bring back to her students. The highlights of this experience have been captured in a video created by Jared Morris, one of the program’s co-teacher leads, documenting their incredible week in D.C.
Richmond has already secured a spot in the 2025 fall cohort, and she encourages other teachers interested in this remarkable opportunity to apply. Her involvement not only enriches the Boise School District but also paves the way for other educators to join this monumental celebration of democracy and history.
For those interested in learning more about Richmond’s experience or the Democracy in Dialogue program, her story stands as an inspiring example of how educators can connect their classrooms with the nation’s story and encourage students to become part of the legacy of American democracy.
