Dear Senior Center Friends,

Happy Hanukkah! The name derives from a Hebrew verb meaning “to dedicate.” This year the Festival of Lights begins Thursday, December 10. Some traditions for this holiday include lighting candles on the menorah, and eating latkes (potato pancakes) and other foods made in oil. While the origin of Hanukkah is more about the defeat of an oppressor, the emphasis is often on the miracle of having enough oil to last eight nights.

We have had a year that some would describe as a struggle, especially emotionally. In a historical context, the sacrifices we have made are not the same as other points in time. But we certainly felt the impact of sometimes not having what we wanted as readily available to us as usual. It taught us some patience, some creativity and it taught us to live without. These are important reminders to appreciate making what we do have last just a little longer.

For those of you who celebrate – I send my best to you and your family.

There is hope on the horizon so keep the lights shining toward a brighter tomorrow.

Stay Safe,
Carrie

Carrie’s Holiday Treasures
The expression is that it is always better to give a gift than to receive one. But all of us have received gifts over the years that are incredibly special because of the nature of the giver. Maybe the item was handmade with care, or perhaps it became even more significant to you after they passed away. Do you have special items that you display this time of year that are especially significant to you?

Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing some holiday treasures that are special in our family because they were handmade with great artistic skill.
This week, I have included several ornaments that were hand beaded by my mother-in-law. She selects a different design each year and starts early in the year to make enough for everyone. They are all a labor of love, since they involve thousands of very tiny beads.

The ornament for this year is the star, which she explained is made in five sections and stitched together. One of the most intricate ones is hard to see since it goes all around the ornament, but it represents the twelve days of Christmas. As you can see, they are all unique! It is always a fun surprise to see what it looks like each year.

I hope you enjoyed seeing some of my treasures and please feel free to send us photos or stories about your special items so we can share with everyone.

Light Laughter With Lynn

Light the Festive Candles
by Aileen Lucia Fisher
Light the first of eight tonight—
the farthest candle to the right.
Light the first and second, too,
when tomorrow’s day is through.
Then light three, and then light four—
every dusk one candle more
Till all eight burn bright and high,
honoring a day gone by
When the Temple was restored,
rescued from the Syrian lord,
And an eight-day feast proclaimed—
The Festival of Lights—well named
To celebrate the joyous day
when we regained the right to pray
to our one God in our own way.
