Steve: Osteoporosis (“porous bone” or low bone density) is not a consequence of aging per se, but is dependent on lifestyle factors, including the use of certain drugs such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), the most popular heartburn medications on the market.

PPIs are only recommended for short-term use, yet 60% of users report staying on the drug for more than one year; 31% are still on them after three years. More than 60% are also taking them to treat conditions for which these drugs are not indicated, such as indigestion.

Dozens of studies show rates of hip fractures are elevated among both long- and short-term users of PPIs, and at all dose levels.

More recent research suggests one of the primary ways by which PPIs damage bone may be by way of collagen, as these drugs have been shown to inhibit collagen production through several mechanisms of action.

Americans spend a whopping $13 billion a year on OTC and prescription proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). It’s estimated that more than 15% of the population are on PPIs. Prescription PPIs like Nexium, Dexilant, Prilosec, Zegerid, Prevacid, Protonix, Aciphex and Vimovo inhibit acid production in your stomach and are routinely used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). OTC versions like Prilosec OTC, Zegerid OTC and Prevacid 24HR are also available.

A 23 year old woman came to see Bonnie for many health issues. She was very underweight, even though she had good caloric intake. She had severe adult acne for which she had been given many external and internal antibiotics. She felt depressed, lethargic, and lacked for energy. She had a B-12 and Vitamin D deficiency, even though she had been taking both in supplement form. She was following a strict gluten-free diet after having been diagnosed with Celiac disease three months prior to her appointment with Bonnie.

Bonnie's immediate recommendations were to add more viable protein to allow her body to heal more rapidly. She also gave her a probiotic to help repair her gut from the overuse of antibiotics. Her final recommendation was for her to take our food reaction blood test.  

When the results of the blood test came back a few weeks later, Bonnie was not surprised to note that she showed reactions to refined sugars, which were feeding her obvious yeast overgrowth caused by her overuse of antibiotics. The surprising result for Bonnie, however, was a major reaction to salicylates, found in many food chemicals, aspirin, and a host of foods. The salicylic acid in her acne preparations was making her skin worse because it created inflammation, instead of reducing it.

Within two months, her symptoms improved dramatically. Her mother showed Bonnie a “before” and “after” picture of her face. She looked so amazing in the “after” picture that Bonnie almost didn’t recognize her! Her mother mentioned the sweetest words that we always like to hear: “Thank you for giving my daughter her life back”.

Are you aware that a significant number of patients who have low back disc surgery still experience back pain and weakness? Many of these patients end up receiving multiple operations. 

The January 2024 Bio Med Central of Muscular Disorders, published an article to determine if patients with low back disc surgery, were less likely to receive a second back operation if they received spinal manipulation. 

This study looked at the records of 756 patients who previously underwent low back disc surgery. All of the subjects were still experiencing back pain and weakness for at least a year. 378 patients then received spinal manipulation and 378 patients did not. 

The results: a second low back operation was less frequent in the group who received spinal manipulation. 

It’s amazing what the body can do when there is a healthier connection within the nervous system.
