In a new study by SmartAsset, a personal finance technology company, Florida was ranked the sixth best state in the U.S. for early retirement.

The ranking is based on factors including personal income and sales tax rates, access to healthcare and availability of leisure activities.

Beating Florida in the rankings were:
1. Wyoming
2. Kentucky
3. Mississippi
4. South Dakota
5. Tennessee

New year, new laws: 
Three new FL laws effective Jan. 1

The final three FL laws signed by Gov. Rick Scott in 2016 to become effective involve cough medicine, insurance policies and delivery of financial documents.
  • SB 938 prohibits manufacturers and distributors from selling cough medicine containing dextromethorphan to anyone under the age of 18.
  • SB 422 disallows insurance companies that cover opioid medications from requiring that patients have prior authorization for non-addicting versions of the medications.
  • SB 1104 allows financial institutions to designate specific locations or agents as the sole locations or agents for delivery of summonses and subpoenas.

  • The Florida Consumer Sentiment Index for December 2016 was 5.6 points higher than the December 2015 CSI.
    • That was the highest Florida CSI since March 2015.
  • The U.S. Index of Consumer Sentiment increased by 4.4 points between November and December 2016.
    • That was the highest recorded national ICS since January 2004.
