Help Us Bid Him A Warm Farewell

BSEEDC Chairman, Vince Modarelli, recently announced that he and his family will be relocating to Greenville, South Carolina for a new job. While we are thrilled for Vince and his family, it is bittersweet to see him go. We thank him for his service on our Board for the past three years and for and the huge impact he made on improving the economic landscape of our community!

NEW U.S. CLUSTER MAPPING AND REGISTRY WEBSITE REVELEAED

 

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker recently announced the launch of the U.S. Cluster Mapping and Registry project, a national economic initiative based at Harvard Business School's Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness and supported by the U.S. Economic Development Administration. The U.S. Cluster Mapping and Registry project aims to strengthen U.S. competitiveness by understanding the economic performance of clusters and regions across the United States. READ MORE

FOUR STEPS TO MAKING THE MOST OF EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES
 
Paul Daemen, of the Manzella Report, wrote "Even as the world becomes a "global village," small to medium-sized companies continue to miss export opportunities. Most business owners believe exporting is either too expensive or inappropriate for them. But with a clear strategy and an understanding of how to seek out marketing opportunities, it is more than possible to become a successful exporter." VIEW FOUR STEPS.

STATE NEWS: Florida's Research Universities Tops Noted Research Triangle for Patent Awards
 
Florida's three major universities are coming together with the goal of being a stronger innovative powerhouse than the Research Triangle in North Carolina or the Texas university system. University of South Florida, University of Florida and University of Central Florida collectively were granted more patents - 239 - than the 130 by the Triangle (Duke University, North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) and 226 granted to the entire University of Texas system, Rice University and Texas A&M University. The numbers and ranking were compiled by the National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association. READ MORE

JUNE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA REGIONAL ECONOMIC INDICATOR REPORT: 
Positive Economic Trends Continue
 
As we continue to move through summer, regional economic trends remain positive. Taxable sales in the region were up 8% in March 2014 over March 2013. Unemployment rates have slowly decreased since the recovery began in 2010.  The unemployment rates for May 2014 were 6.1% in Lee County and 5.9% in Collier County. READ MORE courtesy of the Florida Gulf Coast University Regional Economic Research Institute.

STATEWIDE SURVEY SHOWS FLORIDA'S SMALL BUSINESSES ARE OPTIMISTIC AND SALES ARE INCREASING
 

With Florida's economic recovery continuing to outpace the nation, small businesses reported higher company sales and increased optimism in a new Florida Chamber of Commerce Small Business Index Survey. The survey, conducted in conjunction with the Florida Small Business Development Center Network (SBDC), shows 43% of small businesses reporting higher company sales compared to this time last year.
