Q2 Recap: Je fais une pause

avec has relocated!

I seem to be keeping this trend in my life where I move to a new city (most recently, New York), spend a little over 2 years there, and then return home to North Carolina. I spent a little over 2 years in Chicago from 2018 - 2020, and before that, I spent 2015-2017 in Charleston, SC.

It's now just a normal rhythm to take those couple of years to soak up the city I live in, learn a lot, lose/gain a lot, and then without fail, bid another town farewell once I reach that roughly 2-year threshold.

This most recent move back home - and why I decided to make it - is included in the new blog post, Q2 2024: A Brief Intermission.

"In American culture, particularly at ‘America’s National Ballet Company’ (speaking from my year and a half experience working there), the hustle is not only a lifestyle, but an inescapable, uncompromising standard.

However, something j’adore about French culture (from what I’ve learned watching Emily in Paris) are the purposeful, guilt-free moments of relaxation sprinkled throughout the everyday; it isn’t uncommon to take a 2-hour lunch break including a glass of wine, maybe a cigarette and absolutely no rush to get back to the office.

Sometime over the past year and a half, I sort of un-learned the ability to take a 2-hour break. Then, after a month-long break I was forced to take due to my health, I now have no other option than to take une pause at least once or twice a day each and every single day."

avec hopes to respond to the need for more ways for independent artists and audience members to forge deeper connections with each other.

avec envisions crowded dance floors full of professional dance artists grooving alongside, next to and with audience members. Specifically, audience members who are usually poised in their theater seats, invisible behind the veil of blackness a dancer sees when they look out into the house from the stage.

avec's events ask the question, "am I viewing dance or and I doing dance?" with the hope that you answer, "both!"

Coming up later this year...

From The (Roof) Top!, a gala-esque experience with skyline views asks everyone in attendance - professional dancers performing avec's choreography AND audience members - to share space to groove, move and celebrate the experience of dancing with one another.

I'm fortunate to have you here with me on this journey and deeply appreciate your support. Find out more on avecproductions.org
