I’m so thrilled to be sharing my new novel, A Fortune of Sand, with you.
As a novelist born in Detroit, I've long been captivated by the glamour and grift of the city during its Golden Age. How could a luminous empire, once dubbed "The Paris of the Midwest," vanish? I wanted to transport readers into the forgotten splendor of Detroit before it faded, so when I uncovered a series of long-buried true stories about the city during the Prohibition era, I decided to weave them into the lives of the Lennox Family, a powerful automotive dynasty that believes they can make the rules—and break them.
It took more than a decade to uncover the files and details needed to build the story of Marjorie Lennox, the artistic daughter of an automotive magnate who unearths a web of lies within her own family. Throughout my research, I was repeatedly struck by how far history’s titans have gone to fabricate their legacies, conceal their truths, and how the deceptions impacted women. I aimed to create a narrative mirror of both the era and the city itself. A story that glimmers with ragtime on the surface but conceals darkness at its core.
As such, for your book club gathering, I’ve put together a menu that reflects both the glamour of the 1920s and the tension beneath it—food that feels indulgent, curated, and just a little deceptive.
