We are hurdling towards the end of the year, at least this is what it feels like. But, before 2019 is in your rear view mirror, join us at our library wine tasting on the last Sunday of the year. With the end of 2019 also comes the end of our 20th anniversary celebration. One of the highlights was the release of our Anniversary wine, a club member exclusive. The label shows the view of the vineyard from our Palisade tasting room at Hawkridge. Even Palisade saw snowflakes in December. As the tasting room is located on a hill, the approaching storm from the West is in clear view. This lead to the following inspiration.
Ohh the weather out there is frightful But Bookcliff wines are so delightful And since we've no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. (
Krista Nobilo)
On that note, as always raise a glass of Colorado wine. Ulla & John

Winemaker Dinners at Bookcliff Vineyards
(Tenth installment of celebrating Bookcliff's 20th anniversary)
As this is the last chance to write about "Firsts" during our 20th Anniversary year, I asked myself what would be a fitting topic to write about. As the season of winemaker dinners is upon us, Viola, the topic revealed itself.
Our winemaker dinners started with an idea from Julie Balistreri from
Balistreri Winery in Denver. She suggested that all Front Range wineries offer a sneak preview of our upcoming wine releases in the spring. And the barrel tasting dinners were born.
Though Bookcliff Vineyards had no tasting room at the time, we decided to host the five-course dinner in the dining room of our house and have guests taste the wine out of barrels in our basement where the winery was located. For the next two years this was the arrangement until we moved the winery to Lee Hill Road. Now the barrel tasting dinner is offered on two consecutive days in late April, early May. It has become our most popular winemaker dinner.
Being inspired by my native roots - Germany- we decided to celebrate the end of harvest with traditional Southern German dishes paired with half-fermented wine and current releases. We hosted our first Harvest Dinner at our Pearl Street tasting room. Then after a one year hiatus we resumed the tradition in 2010 for another five years. As I stood in as the chef for the Harvest Dinners I learned to appreciate and value the magic the chefs produce serving five course individually plated dinners at a winery for 40 people.
Starting in 2011 we really got on a roll offering more winemaker dinners perfecting the experience we offer to our guests. We introduced our Local Chefs dinners where we invite chefs who serve our wines at their restaurants. Each chef brings their own style and approach to cooking and their personal flair entertaining guests with stories of their kitchen or farm.
Coming back from a trip to German where I attended a dinner at a winery accompanied by classical music, we started to host dinners called "Mozart with your Merlot". When we stopped making Merlot we switched to "Ensemble with your Jazz", where we served different vintages of Ensemble and two brothers performed classical Jazz on keyboard and saxophone.
In 2012 we held our first "Feast in the Vineyard" at our vineyard in Palisade. The first year we hosted the dinner at our home vineyard. Once we leased the Hawkridge Vineyard we moved the "Feast" up to where we have our tasting room in Palisade now. For the next five years Eric Skokan from the
Black Cat Farm Bistro in Boulder and his wife Jill prepared a family style dinner on a wood burning grill for 80 people. For those of you who had a chance to visit our tasting room in Palisade this year, you experienced the great views from the Hawkridge Vista overlooking our vineyards.
In recent years we added a holiday dinner in December, a Valentine's dinner in February and a Mother's Day dinner in May. We also started to offer more casual family style dinners at the winery last year. In 2018 we hosted a total of eight winemaker dinners at the winery.
As long as people keep coming, chefs are willing and everybody agrees that it is a great experience, we will continue winemaker dinners at the winery offering a special, intimate and truly unique experience for our guests sitting among the barrels with candle light, drinking wine with fabulous food and enjoying good conversations with their neighbors at the table.
