11-11-1918 The Guns Went Silent
 from Larry Yoder

With Veterans Day upon us, we would be remiss if we did not think of the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month in 1918, when the guns went silent and the First World War ended. November 11, 2018 is the one hundredth anniversary of the ending of the fighting for what has been called The Great War, the First World War, and The War to End All Wars. We still live with the effects of this war, perhaps even more than those which followed. Of all the books we have about this great conflict, I have found eight non-fiction volumes here on our shelves that I think those interested in this incredible period will be well-rewarded to read.

Michael Howard
"Best low-cost, short review of the first war I have read."

"My new favorite. Describes the actions of the Americans who were the original body-bearers for the Tomb of the Unknowns."

"This is a coffee table book with great photos and text."

"Revisiting the field of battle traces events and battles as they unfolded."

Gary Sheffield
"Great perspective and photos."

Jack Batten
"An all-time bestseller at the National WWI Museum. Good for all ages."
We're Ready for Small Business Saturday! Are You?

It's almost time for another SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY at The Bookies! This year, we'll be having some old friends returning and new creators making their first appearances in the store. From 11:00am-3:00pm on Saturday, November 24, various writers and artists from the Colorado area will be stopping by to share their creations with you. We have so many we couldn't even fit them all in the picture! So come by to meet them, get your holiday shopping done, or just pick up your next great read!

On Saturday November 17th, we'll be hosting the reps for the various gaming companies that supply us with all the fun games you see in our store. The Bookies' staff just had a chance to participate and learn about all these great games and loved it. Now Bookie Karla wants to make sure our customers get the same chance.

You'll learn how the games work, what ages they are good for, what everyone is talking about and, as Bookie Karla put it, which ones are the best bets to keep your group laughing and happy during holiday visits instead of fighting about politics.

We hope to see you all there!

Happy cooking!

Simple (various editions)
Jean-Francois Mallet
Okay, so this last one is actually three different books. What can we do? Lucianne loves them all so much she can't be expected to pick just one! The SIMPLE series has been going strong for a while, and with this year's entry, DESSERTS, it's not going to stop anytime soon. With big, beautiful pictures, easy to follow directions, and only four steps and six ingredients per recipe, this is the perfect book to get yourself into cooking again and a lot of fun to enjoy with others.
