Banned Books Week was created in 1982 to counter a wave of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. This is a week to celebrate the freedom to read, to highlight the necessity of free and open access to ideas, and to advocate for the protection of these rights.
This year's theme is "Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us." The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom compiles list of challenged books as reported in the media and submitted by librarians and teachers across the country. The Top Challenged Books of 2021 are:

Why are books challenged?
In 2021, the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 729 challenges to library, school, and university materials and services. Many of the books challenged and banned center LGBTQ+ topics, and most were written by Black and LGBTQ+ authors. We encourage everyone to read banned books, this week and all weeks.
