November News
Greetings!

Bookends & Beginnings has joined the American Booksellers Association's nation-wide #BoxedOut campaign! As you can see from our header image this month, we dressed up our new storefront for Halloween this year as the scariest thing we could think of: an Amazon box. Why is that scary? Because Amazon’s stranglehold on consumer dollars has created a monster that’s busy consuming your town’s independent businesses, its unique personality, and its local jobs and sales tax revenue.

We urge you to think twice before you make that click this holiday season! We know it feels easy and convenient, but we can make it easy and convenient for you too!

LET US HELP! We can get a lot of your shopping done for you. But don’t put it off till the last three weeks of December, because stock will be running low on the books everyone wants, and we’ll have to limit the number of people in the store at any given time for social distancing. And who knows, there may be more lockdowns down the pike. SO PLEASE GET STARTED NOW!
HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1.      SHOP OUR NEW HOLIDAY CATALOG
Use this easy link to pop right into our annual gift catalog. You’ll find links within the catalog to conveniently order these books directly from our website, which we can wrap and hold for you for pick-up, ship out to you, or deliver directly to your home (within any Evanston, Rogers Park, Wilmette, or Skokie zip code, $5 delivery charge applies). We can also ship directly to your recipients.
2.      USE OUR NEW CONCIERGE SERVICE

*We’ll consult with you about the suggestions in whatever mode you feel most comfortable: in-person in the store; via phone, Zoom, or email
*All your gifts will be wrapped in our signature B&B holiday wrapping
*Gifts can be delivered straight to your doorstep (within any Evanston, Rogers Park, Wilmette, or Skokie zip code, $5 delivery charge applies), or with standard shipping charges, sent off to your recipients.

We’ve hired new staffers to make sure you get the help you need, and our new storefront at 1716 Sherman will be opening very soon. We’re only hosting one more virtual event in 2020, with poet and performer Fatimah Asghar, so after that we can focus solely on making your holiday season as book-filled as possible.

Read on for more details, and, as always, read on!

Yours,
Nina

A MIDWEST ADDRESS EVENT, CO-SPONSORED BY EVANSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY & THE NORTHWESTERN RAINBOW ALLIANCE
Thursday, November 5, 5 - 6 pm
Join us for a special Midwest Address event co-sponsored by the Northwestern Rainbow Alliance and featuring acclaimed poet and writer Fatimah Asghar.

From a co-creator of the Emmy-nominated web series Brown Girls comes If They Come for Us, an imaginative, soulful debut poetry collection that captures the experiences of being a young Pakistani Muslim woman in contemporary America. Orphaned as a child, Fatimah Asghar grapples with coming of age and navigating questions of sexuality and race without the guidance of a mother or father. These poems at once bear anguish, joy, vulnerability, and compassion, while also exploring the many facets of violence: how it persists within us, how it is inherited across generations, and how it manifests itself in our relationships. In experimental forms and language both lyrical and raw, Asghar seamlessly braids together marginalized people’s histories with her own understanding of identity, place, and belonging.
Fatimah Asghar is a nationally touring poet, performer, educator, and writer. She is the writer of Brown Girls, an Emmy-nominated web series that highlights friendships between women of color. She is a member of Dark Noise and a 2017 Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellow.
Matthew Abtahi is the student organization advisor for the Northwestern Rainbow Alliance and an assistant director of Multicultural Student Affairs at Northwestern University. His work focuses on the celebration, education and advocacy of Northwestern’s Lesbian, Gay, Bi+, Trans, Queer, Intersex and Asexual communities.

Fatimah Asghar: If They Come for Us
France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

Anyone is welcome to join our Science Fiction Book Club, led by Brooke, who is excited to share her passion for diverse science fiction books. If you haven't looked at the science fiction or fantasy shelves in a while, you may be surprised at the influx of talented women, POC, and LGBTQ+ writers that are writing some of the most interesting and compelling works in the genres. Brooke's goal is to highlight these traditionally underrepresented groups. Each month, we'll explore a new read from a diverse SF/F author. Stop by the store to chat with Brooke if you want more info about the club, or send her an email at brooke@bookendsandbeginnings.com.
