National Banner Award Ceremony

RYLE HIGH SCHOOL

Ryle High School earned another elite distinction. They are now a Special Olympics Unified Champion National Banner School. This recognition means they achieved 10 specific benchmarks for full-inclusive sports or fitness programs in a school. This National Banner means Ryle is the best of the best in the Unified Champion Schools program. Friday they held a banner raising ceremony celebration.

Special congratulations go to Jill Rosen, head coach of the Club U program and athletic coordinator at Ryle High School. Rosen said earning the National Banner designation is a tough task with years of work behind it, but the Club U program had buy-in across the Boone County School district, from administrators to the athletic department to the student volunteers.

Governor Andy Beshear and his wife sent a congratulatory video message, Union, Kentucky’s mayor Larry Solomon declared Friday March 1st Unified Champion Schools Day in the City of Union. Also, Kentucky Senator John Schickel drafted a similar resolution for Ryle’s diversity and inclusiveness in Unified Sports.

Congratulations to Ryle High School! See the celebratory pictures below.

TRUTH & CONSEQUENCES

Ockerman Middle School

Truth and Consequences is a program dedicated to the education and prevention of drug and alcohol use with 7th grade students. Students traversed several stations that include talks from recovering addicts, sessions led by school counselors and psychologists and an interactive session where students are given a scenario. Students had to report to the varying individuals they would encounter for their "bad decision" and see what consequences they may face. Students had to talk to a variety of individuals to include school administration, police officers, judges, coroners, etc. This is an impactful event as students heard directly from the community about how drugs and alcohol can take over and ruin their lives. See pictures from the event below.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Kindergarten registration was held this week in the Boone County School District. First time students were given a tour of their future classrooms and they met some of their teachers. These future students were kept occupied with fun activities while parents registered their kindergartener online for school in August. Below are pictures from as many schools as we could cover during the registration period.

During Military Kids Day last month students from all over the state visited the state capital in Frankfort. The students were Pages for part of the day and were presented certificates from the legislator that they paged for. Here's what one military parent, Mr. Mike Wilson, who served in the Army, had to say about the day. He took his two children down for an educational experience and submitted these pictures and the following information.

"They started the day with the opportunity to speak at the Veterans Affairs Subcommittee as the committee finalized a bill that was voted on later in the day. Next, they had a scavenger hunt in the capital that took them to the governor's office, Supreme Court chambers, law library, and all throughout the Rotunda before they ended the day working as a page.

Hunter Wilson helped Sen Schickel and Kayla Wilson helped Rep Marianne Proctor. They had a long, exciting day." -- GMS Parent Mike Wilson
