SCHOOL BOARD NOTES

Break The Mold

November’s Break The Mold award winner is Sandra Linden, Financial Secretary and School Clerk at Thornwilde Elementary School. Considered the heartbeat of Thornwilde, Mrs. Linden has been presenting a smile and cheerful “hello, how may I help you,” at the Wildcat school for 11 years now. She has recently taken on and mastered a new role but still loves her daily comedic productions designed with the students in mind, as you will get to see in this video.

Representatives of the Boone County Business Association presents a check to the school district. The BCBA hosts an annual Golf Outing to raise money to support Boone County Schools Alternative Education programs. In conjunction with Potter’s Ranch they also sponsor a holiday event to provide cold weather gear (coats, hats and gloves) for our district children in need. We appreciate this collaborative partnership! Pictured above center from the BCBA: Don Reilly and Donnie Martin.

SPECIAL SCHOOL BOARD WORKSHOP

Last week our School Board hosted a special board workshop with Senators John Schickel & Gex Williams and Representatives Marianne Proctor & Steve Rawlings. It was an opportunity to discuss several issues impacting public education and any current and future legislative bills. We would like to thank Pat Crowley for serving as our moderator.

SUPERINTENDENTS DISTRICT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

Food Services This session was held at Thornwilde Elementary School. It started with explaining what the Food Service Department does. Our Food Service Department is under the leadership of Director Stephanie Steele. Food Service is one of the hardest working departments in a school district with 26 kitchens and more than 200 food service employees is the Boone County Schools food services department. Boone County Food Services serves breakfast, lunch and has an after school snack program. Summer Feeding Sites supply breakfast and lunch during the summer months. The Food Service operation is a business that must comply with many more regulations than those in the private sectors. They must operate as non-profits yet they need to make enough money to be self-sufficient. There are federal nutritional guidelines to follow and the meals have to be attractive to hard-to-please consumers. The Ambassadors were treated to a specially cooked meal that is a typical lunch for students. Then they participated in a tour of the kitchen and Principal David Fuller took the group on a tour of the school.

Cooper High School Networking & Etiquette Banquet

Cooper Career and Technical Education students (CTE), taught by Caylen Knight, attended an educational banquet at the UK Enrichment Center in Burlington to brush up on their career networking skills and etiquette. Often times an interview may be conducted over lunch or dinner. Networking with others to find a job may also be over a meal. Invited guests were Jamie Badgett, Senior Vice President and Head of E-Commerce at Stored Value Solutions who spoke on Career Networking. And Kayla Howard, Family and Consumer Sciences Program Consultant at the Kentucky Department of Education. Students learned from Mr. Badgett techniques on how to conduct themselves during an interview, how to ask questions and inquire about a profession while networking and from Ms. Howard the etiquette of a proper place setting and how to properly eat a meal. In attendance were Director of Special Education Jodi Hall and Assistant Superintendent Tara Drysdale.
