Jennifer Ledwith
Do you feel a sliver of anxiety when your teacher assigns you word problems? Some students would prefer doing 12 straight hours of regular math with just numbers -- and no words -- to avoid 1 page of word problems. Why is this? Problem solving is the most relevant aspect of math. Now don't get me wrong, I love factoring polynomials, but seriously, when does this show up in real life? On the other hand, you need problem solving because you need to be able to figure things out on your own.

The con artists, the clueless folks, the well-meaning individuals who contribute too much (bad) advice -- these are the 3 types of people you will encounter in this world. With this board of advisors, it's no wonder that you must hone your problem solving skills.

Your challenges aren't going to present themselves in tidy equations. Problems are sticky, icky, and require you to think. Some of my students have described their approaches to word problems in this way:

1. Multiply the first 2 numbers of the word problem.
2. Take the result from Step 1 and divide by the 3rd number in the word problem.

If you solve problems on Planet Earth like this, you might multiply the amounts for your water and cell phone bills, and then divide that number by your monthly electric charges. What does that solve? Nothing! Stop cruising through life on rote recall. Things that you do repetitively-- walking, talking, holding a fork-- are stored in your rote memory. Real challenges require creativity.

Use the Following Steps to Solve Word Problems
1. Identify the problem.
2. Identify what you know.
3. Make a plan.
4. Carryout the plan.
5. Verify that the answer makes sense.

PARENT TESTIMONIAL FROM SAT PREP COURSE

What did you LIKE about the course?
"I liked that my student walked away feeling like they learned something from the course. My student had no problem getting up for the class, so I know they enjoyed themselves."

What did you NOT LIKE about the course?
"All that weekly work was too much. I understand that the students need to be engaged in class, but my student felt like they were doing more work for this class then they do in school. Sometimes my student neglected school work in order to make sure they met this class's requirements. Too much work outside the classroom."
