The Chamber at the Helm for 2017

A 2016 BC Business magazine survey found 31% of BC business leaders foresee the effect of government actions on businesses to be the biggest challenge facing their company over the next five years.

This is where The Chamber can help you.

As the voice of Greater Victoria businesses, we engage elected officials at all levels of government to ensure the region's business interests are heard.

To support this work, The Chamber annually identifies key priority areas based on member feedback and consultations. For 2017, The Chamber's advocacy efforts will be focused on the following issues:
  • Affordable Housing
  • Climate Change
  • Labour Supply and Retention
  • Local Economy
  • Local Government: Governance & Services
  • Regulatory Environment
  • Transportation

Kicking Off Canada's Sesquicentennial Year canada
The first major New Year's Eve celebration in Victoria since the turn of the new millennium, Spirit of 150 Victoria - First Night, was a huge success. One of only 19 official events funded by the federal government, Victoria's programme ended with fireworks at  9 pm, timed to coincide with the midnight spectacle in Ottawa.

Highlights included a giant jellyfish and octopus puppet show, a digital light show projected onto The Fairmont Empress and the legislature, musical acts, Trial Bike Performances and food trucks.

Congrats to Atomique Productions for producing an amazing event! Looking forward to the July 1st celebration.

$10 Million Royal BC Museum Reno
The Royal BC Museum is revving up for a $10 million renovation to showcase its Emily Carr works, refurbish its 1970s-era First Peoples Gallery and create a new Pacific Worlds Gallery and learning centre.

The top priority is a gallery devoted to the world's largest collection of Carr works, much of it in storage since the artist's death in 1945. These 1,100 pieces include sculptures, sketches, notebooks and textiles as well as paintings obtained when the museum merged with the B.C. Archives in 2003.

The $10 million renovation will be just the first of five phases of redevelopment on the site in a 25-year project called Treasures for Generations.
