News & Notes with Fr. Pete Jankowski

St. Anne's History Lesson

Feel free to contact Fr. Pete at email [email protected]. If you have an emergency, please contact Fr. Pete at (815) 685-1359

First, your St. Anne history lesson for the day…

On Wednesday, Fr. John Horton from the Peoria diocese came to visit St. Anne’s Church. He tells me he was born in 1940 and that his mentor growing up in Chicago was Rev Joseph Adlore Dionne (1894-1971), who was pastor at St. Anne’s from I believe 1937-1940 (prior to when the Viatorians re-established themselves at St. Anne’s).

Fr. Dionne left such an impression on Fr. Horton that this octogenarian priest wished to visit all the parishes that Fr. Dionne once served, including St. Anne’s Church on Wednesday.

The only problem with Fr. Dionne's visit was that the parish is in the midst of her painting upgrade, with a large albatross in the form of a hydraulic lift cluttering the inside of the church. With rain in the forecast again this weekend, we may be stuck celebrating Mass with the albatross in our midst, as Fr. Horton had to endure on Wednesday.

That said, I received a nice email from Carl & Carolyn Wenning, who coordinated this trip with Fr. Horton to our neck of the woods. This was the "thank you" note they wrote me...

Thanks so very much for working with my wife Carolyn and I to have Fr. John Horton say Mass at St. Anne yesterday. At the end of the day, Fr. Horton was elated due to three things: the privilege of saying Mass, seeing trains in Chicago (he used to be a fireman on a train during his seminary days), and discovering an excellent source of deep-fried catfish in Lexington, IL! You helped make Fr. Horton very happy. I shall never forget your kindness! Carl Wenning - Normal, IL.

You just never know who you affect in life by God’s example through each of us. God bless Fr. Dionne, Fr. Horton… and all of you! Continue to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Yesterday (July 6), Ema and I had a nice talk with Chief of Police, Patrick Siemsem of Momence. He was telling us that with all the restrictive rules there are in the public school system, the gymnasium on our property is needed more than ever as an emergency center for schools and nursing homes. If there is a police situation at school, a nursing home situation, or for large receptions for funerals and other events, the people of Momence are using our gymnasium for help.

With this in mind, I asked the chief to explore the idea of getting us grant money so that we can put a parking lot on the campus for the gym (tuckpointing the gym might be in the cards as well). There is very limited parking space on Hill Street, where the gym is located. Perhaps, if we work well with the chief and the good folks of the city, good things could be done in Momence.

I was thinking, perhaps we could use the same mentality over at St. Anne's. If we looked at both of our parish halls as emergency centers or places where people could celebrate receptions (because there is no other place in the area to do them), perhaps we could pursue grant money to help us upkeep that building as well. If I am correct, on Wednesday night, we had a funeral reception at St. Anne's Hall whose funeral did not take place at the parish.

If you know of anyone who can assist us to write grants, feel free to contact the office to help us out!

I also wish to thank Joe Kraus for all his work he has done on our Bathroom Project at St. Pat's Gym. It took a while to do (Joe had to heal with health issues during this project) but we got to the other side of this project and we are most grateful for all Joe has done for the St. Pat's community.

Wally Martin will be installing the floor on our shuffleboard court next week, so hopefully we an put to rest that part of the gym project as well.

The person who significantly was responsible for addressing the debt was Kathy Griffiths, who made great inroads in attacking St. Pat's financial woes. This week, Kathy had to step away from her job at the parishes due to health issues; her doctor told her to pull back from so much work, so leaving the parishes was a hard but necessary decision she had to make.

Blessed for us, a business manager named Julie has stepped in for Kathy and seamlessly has continued Kathy's good work. Julie serves as a business manager in the diocese and is a wonderfully spiritual person. She and Ema are already fast friends (not so much with me... Julie seems to prefer the White Sox over the Cubs so pray for the conversation of her baseball soul...).

ST. PATRICK BORDER TOWN PICNIC - SEPTEMBER 24, 2023 STARTING WITH THE 10:30 MASS

Parishioner Joanne Hermann suggested that we re-dedicate the gymnasium at the parish picnic, blessing a sign that should read "St. Pat's Academy Gym and Community Center." She is working on getting this project done while secretary Ema Elvir continues to line up vendors for the event (as well as at St. Anne's Novena - thanks for our newly installed video camera inside the church... and our wonderful donor who made this possible!!!). At present, we are working on having at the parish picnic a Vendor Fair, a Rummage Sale, a Car Show, the Illinois Migrant Council giving out free computers to migrants, as well as our games, music and all the stuff thjat goes with a parish picnic. If you are willing to help, please contact Ema at either parish (she is at St. Anne's on Mondays and Tuesdays and at St. Patrick's on Wednesdays and Thursdays). Thanks to Anne Andrade for helping us out in the summer as well at St. Pat's Office!

"God does not give up on us even when we give up on God" - this is Fr. Pete's theme for this homily... and for life! Even in the worst of times, God waits for us to turn for guidance and love. When we do - when we believe - great things await us on the other side of life.
