Congratulations to Japan!!

Japan won the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday night, March 21, 2023, downing Team USA 3-2 in the championship game at loanDepot Park in Miami. The game ended in dramatic fashion with Japan's Shohei Ohtani striking out his MLB teammate Mike Trout with a full-count slider to seal Japan's third title.

“World Baseball Classic final was an exciting sports event to be part of even though my USA team lost to Japan. Beautiful stadium in Miami with amazing food and beverage choices,” said Eric McFerran, NY PATA member.

Gastronomy - Dine Around

Research shows that the #1 driver for tourism interest in Asia-Pacific is gastronomy.

We would like to applaud and further encourage dining experiences of local cuisines and exotic cultures of the Asia-Pacific region, here in our own backyard.

Food has become an essential entity among other products to attract tourists. Upon satisfaction with local foods, tourists intensify their motivation toward a specific destination.

Gastronomy is much more than just-food. It represents distinct peoples' cultures, history, customs, and feelings of community. It is a method of enhancing cultural understanding and bringing people and traditions closer together.

The next Dine Around will be Philippine Gastronomy

Adelaide Wine Capital of Australia

Adelaide is the wine capital of Australia - and one of the 11 Great Wine Capitals of the World, together with Bordeaux in France, Napa Valley in the US, and Bilbao Rioja in Spain. Australia is the 7th largest wine producing country in the world. The largest wine production region by far is South Australia.

The network of global wine capitals shares a common asset: their internationally renowned wine regions. South Australia wine region contains six primary wine-growing areas of which the major regions are Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, and Adelaide Hills. Each of the sub-regions produces a very distinct and unique type of wine.

Efforts toward sustainability have formed a significant part of the Australian wine landscape since the 1980s. The Sustainable Winegrowing Australia Impact Report highlights the difference members are making by sharing the sustainable practices they undertake in the key areas of biodiversity, energy, water, waste, land, and soil, and people and business. It also highlights the demand from consumers for sustainably made wine.

If you know about Australian wine, chances are you know about the Barossa Valley. Less than an hour's drive from Adelaide in South Australia, it is one of the world's great wine regions, famous for its full-flavored Shiraz, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Shiraz is Australia's signature red variety, and it is truly at home on Kangaroo Island. Flavors of plum and berries combine with dark coffee notes for deliciously powerful long-lived wines. Beautiful Kangaroo Island is a mix of stunning beaches, forests, desert dunes and farmland and is rapidly gaining a reputation for high-quality wine.

Travel Trade Roadshows

The South Australian Tourism Commission’s Roadshow came to New York with 25 Top Tourism Operators from the state of South Australia, all eager to update travel advisors on their WOW (Wildlife, Outback, and Wine) experiences!

The Marketplace Meetings ran from 8:30am to 4pm and included breakfast, refreshment breaks, and lunch. We had meetings one-on-one with key South Australian suppliers, all of whom exemplify the genuine WOW moments of their state.

The Fleurieu Peninsula is the most visited region in South Australia, located less than 40 minutes from Adelaide’s CBO. The regions rugged coastline and forests offer incredible opportunities for hiking and to meet some of Australia’s iconic wildlife in the wild. We met with wine specialists who provide intimate and unique tours to the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Adelaide Hills wine regions.

Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island with over 540 km of spectacular coastline. Just a short distance off the coast of South Australia, Kangaroo Island is internationally recognized for its pristine wilderness and wildlife as well as a thriving food and wine industry. KI is one of the best places in Australia to see wild animals like koalas, kangaroos, sea lions and seals. The Island is similar in size to Long Island (New York) or Bali.

Bright, bold, and full of personality, Shiraz is Australia's most popular variety. It grows in almost every wine region of Australia, accounts for one-quarter of total wine production, and is South Australia’s most exported wine. We were introduced to 2 lovely McLaren Vale wines.

d'Arenberg Shiraz/Grenache Darry's Original, Australia, Fleurieu, Mclaren Vale 2019. Produced using 50% Shiraz and 50% Grenache grapes. Amazing ruby color. Quite floral with a fusion of black and red fruits. Red berries and notes of fresh red cranberries. Hints of pomegranate and rhubarb. Fine and round tannins.

d'Arenberg The Hermit Crab Marsanne, Viognier, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Australia 2021. It's a medium bodied white wine, with green papaya, melon, white nectarine, stone fruits, followed by a little hint of ginger on the finish. Very complex. There is good acidity carrying the wine.

The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the longest canal or artificial river in the world.

Starting in Beijing, it passes through Tianjin and the provinces of Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang to the city of Hangzhou, a total distance of 1,104 miles, linking the Yellow River and Yangtze River.

Its greatest height is reached in the mountains of Shandong, at a summit of 138 feet. Ships in Chinese canals did not have trouble reaching higher elevations after the pound lock was invented in the 10th century, during the Song dynasty (960-1279), by the government official and engineer, Qiao Weiyue.

The Grand Canal played a major role in reunifying north and south China. The canal connected the Yellow River in the north with the Yangtze River in the south, which made it much easier to transport grain from the south to the centers of political and military power in north China.

Today, the canal is still heavily used in the Yangtze delta. About 100,000 river vessels transit on the canal each year, carrying about 260 million tons, mostly construction material.

The Grand Canal &

Water Navigation Lock

The Water Navigation Lock was invented and developed in China in the 10th century to make it possible to raise and lower a ship to go from one water level to another. It was first used in Europe during the Middle Ages.

The Grand Canal was built in 468 BC, and it went through renovations and enlargements three times in history, which were in the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC-476 BC), the Sui Dynasty (581-618) and the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) respectively.
