Oakland Recreation Commission Chair Mike Guadagnino Credits Dedicated Volunteers for Success of Past Projects, and Shares Vision for Future Ones
Mike Guadagnino, who moved to Oakland in 1998, first became involved in sports recreation through his role as a dad.
He started out coaching when his kids began playing sports, then joined the baseball leadership, eventually becoming the baseball commissioner.

During his tenure, six baseball fields were revamped.“The ones we had were tired,” he said, adding that it's important to "always work to make something better."
In 2006, Guadagnino, who has a chiropractic practice in Ramsey, began serving on Oakland’s Recreation Commission, and continued his tireless dedication and visionary work on developing programs and recreational space for the residents of the borough. He became chairman in 2012. One the projects he is most proud of is the borough Recreation Complex, which houses soccer, baseball and football fields, tennis courts, a walking path with workout machines in one area, a playground, and a roller hockey rink.

Mayor's Message
It is important for everyone to know what is happening and be informed about future events. I try to keep Oakland residents current with news in our town. I report upcoming events during my mayor's message at the beginning of every council meeting. I then summarize in my mayor's Facebook page subsequently. Now I have the opportunity to reach residents through our monthly newsletter. Thank you, Elizabeth, for taking on this task. I want to make sure that interested and qualified residents are aware of the "Senior Freeze Program,"  offering some tax relief in the form of a senior property tax freeze program.
Oakland Mayor Linda Schwager
This Senior Freeze Program is available to residents 65 and older or individuals with disabilities who meet the eligibility requirements. The income eligibility amount to qualify for the 2018 year is $89,013 for single or combined income if married or in a civil union.

According to the State Department of Taxation, all income for the year must be taken into account and are given a base amount. Taxpayers must pay the full tax bill every year. The State program will reimburse the taxpayer any amount paid that exceeds the base. Forms must be filed annually. There are rules and regulations. For further information call 1-800-882-6597.

Deadline to file application is October 31st.

Until next time,

Linda H. Schwager, Mayor of Oakland

First Responders Flash Briefing
U Drive. U Text. U Pay
Distracted driving is a dangerous epidemic on New Jersey’s roadways, being cited as a major contributing factor in over 804,000 motor vehicle crashes in the state from 2011 to 2015. Nationwide 3,450 people were killed in distracted driving crashes in 2016 alone.

To combat these troubling statistics, law enforcement agencies throughout New Jersey will be using a combination of traditional and innovative strategies to crack down on motorists who text and drive. This effort is a part of the national U Drive. U Text. U Pay high-visibility enforcement (HVE) campaign that combines periods of intense anti-texting enforcement coupled with advertising and media outreach to let people know about the enforcement and convince them to obey the law. U Drive. U Text. U Pay enforcement strategies include roving police patrols, spotters on highway overpasses, and stationary police vehicles prominently placed at strategic locations.

Historically, the most effective tool used to change driver behavior are targeted law enforcement campaigns, like Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket . Since their inception, these two initiatives have resulted in significant reductions in impaired driving and gains in seat belt usage, respectively.

Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety. These types of distractions include:
Texting
Using a cell phone or smartphone
Eating and drinking
Talking to passengers
Grooming
Reading, including maps
Using a navigation system
Watching a video
Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player

The Oakland Police Department encourages all drivers to keep their eyes on the road.

Project Medicine Drop
Project Medicine Drop is an initiative involving the installation of "prescription drug drop boxes" at participating New Jersey police departments.

The Oakland Police Department keeps the locked metal box inside our lobby with the “Project Medicine Drop” logo clearly visible and recognizable.
Project Medicine Drop allows the public to dispose of unused and expired prescription medications safely, securely, and anonymously. The opportunity is available seven days a week, 365 days a year.

If you are disposing of medication we ask that you follow this procedure:

  • We do not accept loose medication and request it be placed in a Ziploc bag.
  • Deposit the sealed Ziploc bag into our drop box

We CANNOT and DO NOT accept:

  • medical waste
  • syringes
