Welcome

Calgary’s downtown core is a bustling area full of restaurants, museums, and stores. Start planning your visit today, by checking out a map of the area around the Telus Convention Centre here.

The Bouchercon 2026 Website is full of information. We have tips for authors, first-timers, visitors travelling from out of country, and so much more. Spend some time touring through the site this month so you know what to expect in October and check back often– as our plans progress, so does the site.

We can’t wait to welcome you this fall and show you all we have to offer.

David Thompson Special Service Award

The National Bouchercon Board has selected author and Sisters in Crime Executive Director Julie Hennrikus as the 2026 David Thompson Special Service Award recipient.

Named after David Thompson, a beloved Houston bookseller who passed away in 2010, the Special Service Award recognizes people and organizations who have demonstrated extraordinary efforts to develop and promote the crime fiction field.

The award will be presented at the Opening Ceremonies in Calgary on October 22.

Congratulations to Julie for this well-deserved honour!

Meet the Special Guests: Hart Hansen

Hart Hanson is best known for creating the television series “Bones” (based on our Guest of Honour, Kathy Reichs’ books) which ran for 12 seasons, the longest-running scripted hour-long series in Fox history.

Hart started writing in his native Canada for CBC television shows The Beachcombers, North of 60, Neon Rider, The Odyssey, Road to Avonlea, Ready Or Not, Street Legal, Outer Limits, and Stargate SG-1, and he created Gemini-Award-winning Global Television series, Traders.

In Hollywood, Hart rose through the ranks of American TV shows including Cupid, Snoops, Judging Amy and Joan of Arcadia, after which he created Bones, The Finder, and Backstrom.

Hart is the author of The Driver (Dutton Books, 2017), a New York Times' “Best Crime Novels of 2017” with starred reviews from Booklist, iBooks, and Library Journal. The Seminarian (Blackstone, 2024) is in development as a TV series at Netflix, and Venice Flats is forthcoming from Blackstone in 2027.

We’re excited to have him join us as a Special Guest at Bouchercon 2026. For more information, check out his website here.

Special Events for Authors

Applications open today (August 10th) for the Author Fair, Speed Dating, or the Debut Author Breakfast. Only AUTHORS need apply. Please double check the qualification requirements before you apply and note that applications close August 24th.

*Please note: Special Events are free and included with the convention registration for audience members.

Speed Dating (Thursday, October 22 from 7AM to 9AM)

At this event, authors circulate tables of fans to pitch their books. We will organize you in pairs and at each stop, the first author has two minutes to pitch the fans at that table. When the bell rings, the second author has two minutes for their pitch. At the next bell, authors move to a new table of fans. Authors are encouraged to bring swag (bookmarks or postcards) to share with about 200 readers/fans.

Debut Authors’ Breakfast (Friday, October 23 from 7AM to 9AM)

During this showcase, thirty debut authors will be introduced by a Guest of Honour and will have one minute to tell attendees about their novel. Debut authors will also be included in an event brochure and are welcome to bring promotional materials for the fans. To qualify, your debut mystery novel must be published between September 4, 2025, and October 21, 2026, and this must be your first novel (the exceptions are previous non-fiction books, children’s books, or poetry).

The Author Fair (Friday, October 23 from 7PM to 8:30PM)

If you’re an indie, self-published, or small press author—if your books are not traditionally published and routinely distributed to bookstores—and if your books are not available in the Book Room, then you can apply for a table at the Author Fair to sell your books.

Underrepresented Authors Reception

Author Bingo returns! Join us for this popular format, a fun and dynamic way to socialize and mingle with your favourite crime writers. Free food, a cash bar, and door prizes provide the lively backdrop for the social event of the weekend, sponsored by SinC International and hosted by Crime Writers of Color. All convention-goers are warmly welcomed to attend!

Fun Facts

The Telus Convention Centre is full of nooks to inspire creativity. If you’re on deadline, or struck by inspiration, look for one of these productivity pods. They will dim the outside noise and help you chase your muse.

Anthony Award Nominees

Have you been reading the nominees? Voting will take place this October in Calgary, and every attendee gets a vote. Make yours count by reading as many of the nominees as you can. Check out the website here to find a printable pdf so you can record your thoughts on each book or story as you read.

Share the progress on social media and make sure to use #BoucherconReads

Volunteer Info

Bouchercon is made possible by the dedication and generosity of our volunteers, and we would love to have you join the team!

There are many ways to get involved, both before and during the event. Many volunteer opportunities are simple, short shifts that allow you to contribute while still enjoying the convention. In fact, some roles let you participate in events you were already planning to attend.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to help make Bouchercon run smoothly, meet fellow attendees, and become even more connected with the Bouchercon community.

Some examples of volunteer opportunities include:

  • Setting up the Book Bazaar and Silent Auction
  • Welcoming attendees, assisting with Registration, and distributing name tags
  • Timekeeping at Panels — a great way to enjoy a panel you already wanted to attend, while helping the moderator keep the schedule on track
  • Assisting with setup for Speed Dating or the Author Breakfast

For more information, click here. Volunteer registration will be completed online this year. Please click here for the form.

Please sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. Additional roles and details will continue to be added as plans are finalized, so be sure to check back regularly.

Thank you for sharing your time and energy with us. Bouchercon would not be possible without the incredible support of our volunteers, and we truly appreciate your help in making this year’s convention a success. If you have any questions, please contact volunteer2026@bouchercon.com.

Registration

Registration check-in will open at 9 am on Wednesday October 21, 2026, and we’re finalizing details! Our RegSpace – where you can check-in and pick up your name badge, lanyard, and your swaggy convention materials – will be located in the Exhibition Hall Lobby Area at the Calgary Telus Convention Centre (CTCC North Building, Second Level). It has an incredible view, so come ready for your first photo op.

When you first arrive at the CTCC, we ask that you budget for at least 15 to 20 minutes to go through your check-in and pick-up all your materials before you attend your first convention session.

We’re working hard to ensure that everything is smooth and as quick as possible for everyone.

Please Note: Convention registration and payment can only be completed through the Bouchercon 2026 website. We will never send a link for registration payment via email, PayPal, Zelle, etc. Payments are to Bouchercon Inc., in U.S. dollars.
