RUG SPOTLIGHT
Process of Cutting and Finishing An Area Rug
| | |
Start by deciding the dimensions and shape you want to cut the rug.
You usually want to apply a fabric tape or adhesive at the edge of the cut to ensure the rug does not unravel further than wanted.
Binding is the simplest way to finish any rug. This is done by choosing a type of fabric and stitching it to the edges of the rug.
Machine-made rugs could also be finished by stitching on a pre-made fringe. With handmade rugs you can either leave the warp longer to incorporate fringe that goes past the binding or cut it closer for no fringe to show past the binding.
Serging is the most common way to finish a rug. Machine serging is tight and consistent, and although it costs much less on a handmade rug you will see a noticeable contrast from the rug itself. Hand-serging takes time, but when done correctly by a professional, it is the best option to finish a rug with luxurious appeal.
