Dear Cornell Bowers,

Don't let the recent snow and sudden dip in temperatures get you down — there are small but welcome signs that spring is on its way. The days are stretching a little longer, and with that extra light comes a sense of momentum across our community.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Giving Day — whether by spreading the word, donating, or signing thank you postcards for our donors. Your enthusiasm and generosity help strengthen the Bowers community and make a meaningful difference. Congratulations as well to Neha Sudarshan, Grace Wei, and Mahidul Islam, student volunteers and winners of the Bowers swag.

Best of luck to all of you taking prelims. Please remember to prioritize your health and reach out to faculty, staff, and peers for support when you need it.

Sincerely,

AI on deck: assessing impact of MLB’s new ball-strike system

For 150 years, Major League Baseball players and fans have accepted that umpires occasionally miss balls and strikes, but this spring, MLB is introducing an AI‑enhanced camera system that lets players challenge questionable calls. This shift inspired a Cornell research team to examine how MLB stakeholders are adapting to the Automated Ball‑Strike System (ABS).

Experts examine the use of generative AI in science

“GenAI has tremendous potential to reveal new insights, but it is vital that we move beyond anecdotes to systematically assess its impact, and take an active hand in how its use in science unfolds in the future.”

AI assistants can sway writers’ attitudes, even when they’re watching for bias
