Submit Your Spirits Now for ACSA's Judging Competition
Once again, the American Craft Spirits Association, in affiliation with Artisan Spirit Magazine, is proud to announce its Judging of Craft Spirits. This judging competition stands out because it's the  only  craft judging competition assembled, organized and overseen by  you , the distilling community. We're also pleased to debut the Innovation Award, designed especially for outstanding spirits that may not fit with traditional flavor profiles of particular categories. We will present the Innovation Award in addition to each category's Best of Class honor. Entrance fees are $250 per spirit for ACSA members and $350 per spirit for non-members. The final deadline to enter is October 8, 2018. Best of Show earns both a coveted medal AND a Gilson hand-crafted snowboard or pair of skis.
Washington House Votes to Repeal Law Barring Distilleries on Tribal Lands
Washington tribes are a step closer to legally being able to open distilleries. Herrera Beutler, R-Battle Ground, introduced a bill earlier this year to repeal a 19th-century law prohibiting such establishments on tribal lands. The House unanimously passed the bill Wednesday. Herrera Beutler said on the House floor that she first became aware of the issue thanks to the Chehalis Tribe, which has plans to open a distillery and brewery on its land. Current law directs the government to destroy any distilleries operating on tribal land. (The Columbian)
Shine Distillery & Grill to Open in Portland, Oregon Next Year
North Portland’s next brewpub isn’t a brewpub at all: Shine Distillery & Grill, a working distillery and restaurant, is coming to North Williams, delivering the classic brewery and restaurant experience with a focus on local craft spirits. “I spent 20 years working in local breweries,” says owner Jonathan Poteet, an Alameda Brewing alum. “I’m trying to copy what I call the brewpub formula... It’s not necessarily date night food; it’s Tuesday night food.” (Eater Portland)

In late 2016, Cabot's Hooker Mountain Farm became Vermont's first grain-based distillery to produce spirits using entirely farm-grown materials. Now, they're bringing their business to the Marshfield Village Store, where they just opened a tasting room. (Seven Days VT)

Now the inside of the depot has been transformed into a warm, stylish home for Wausau's newest small business, Timekeeper Distillery. It's like stepping back in time to a speakeasy, but with a modern flare. (Wausau Daily Herald)

Virginia Celebrates Boom in Craft Distilleries
Belmont Farm Distillery owner Chuck Miller can sympathize with the Maytag repairman. Like the actor in the appliance company’s old ad, Miller said he was “kinda lonely” the first 10 years after he opened Culpeper Country’s first craft distillery in 1988. All that has changed thanks to the recent boom in craft distilleries popping up across Virginia. (Fredericksburg.com)
