Summer Festivals Need Volunteers

As the excitement of a fun-filled festival season is upon us, this year, more than ever VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED. Countless hours are spent planning, executing, and promoting events, often times by small committees. This year, more then ever, the community and our businesses are looking forward to have some normalcy back in Boyne City.

Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. And, volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills.

There are several opportunities to volunteer. Contact the chamber at 231-582-6222 or info@boynechamber.com for a list of organizations that NEED YOUR HELP!!!
Volunteers needed for Back to the Bricks

Boyne City Main Street is seeking volunteers to assist with the Back to the Bricks car show event on Sunday, June 6th. Volunteers are needed from 11 a.m. – approx. 1 p.m. to help with street closures and directing cars on where to park. The event will take place from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. so there will be plenty of time to enjoy the show afterwards. Please contact Kelsie at mainstreet@boynecity.com if you are able to volunteer.

This year is the 11th Annual Back to the Bricks Promo Tour, which takes attendees to five different stops throughout Michigan in order to promote and enjoy the beautiful state, stimulate local economies through supporting small businesses, and promote the Back to the Bricks main event in August in Flint, Mich. The event brings both money spent on food, lodging, gas and souvenirs from tour attendees as well as those who visit downtown to see the event. Tour participants often revisit the cities visited for a personal vacation and encourage family and friends to visit and enjoy the area.
In addition to the car show, the following bands are scheduled to play downtown during the event:
Full Circle – Located at corner of Water & East Streets
Northern Nites – Located at Harbor House Publishers
Dr. Goodhart – Located at corner of Water & Park Streets
De Railed – Located at corner of Water & Lake Streets
Jon Archambault Band – Located at corner of Lake & Ray Streets
James Greenway Band – Located at corner of Lake & Main Streets
There will be a car event taking place at Classic Instruments on Saturday, June 5th as well, sponsored by BC Pizza and BC Lanes/The Venue Sports Bar & Grill. Check back for more details on that.

ODAWA CASINO - Collects For Purses With A Purpose
Odawa Casino, with the help of the community, presented donations to the Michigan State Police for their Purses with a Purpose program last week. In honor of Women’s History Month, the Michigan State Police launched the Purses With a Purpose program to help collect important items for victims of sexual assault. When a survivor is leaving an abusive situation, they often must do so quickly and are not able to take necessities with them. The goal of the program was to collect donations of purses that are filled with comfort items and necessities to provide them to these survivors. ‘Purses with a Purpose’ was started in 2019 by a trooper at the Cadillac, MI post who saw what a great need for support there was for victims of sexual assault. Since then, the program has grown and become successful at other MSP posts throughout the state of Michigan. Odawa Casino became a drop off location for items this April and plans to continue to participate in years to come. Owned and operated by the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, Odawa Casino in Petoskey opened in June, 2007 and features nearly 1,000 slot machines, table games, multiple dining options, the fabulous Victories Sports and Entertainment Bar, and an off property 137-room hotel. Odawa Casino Mackinaw City opened in May 2016, and recently completed a new expansion for an even higher quality gaming experience.

NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE Formally Adopts The Timberwolf as New Mascot
For the first time in 63 years, North Central Michigan College has an official mascot.
During an April 27 meeting, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously in favor of the mascot that students said best represents the college: The North Central Timberwolf.
President David Roland Finley said the Timberwolf captures the spirit of the college and its students.
“Wolves embody many of the characteristics of North Central students, including intelligence, resilience, drive, focus and teamwork,” Finley said. “They are known for working together so that the whole pack succeeds. You’ll find the same attitude among our entire campus community.”
Carol Laenen, vice president of Marketing, said the adoption of the Timberwolf mascot follows a months-long, data-driven process that included two rounds of surveys, extensive sentiment analysis and tests of concept art. Visit their website HERE for more info!
