Finances look good; City won't seek tax levy to buy Open Space

From the Petoskey News-Review: The city has scrapped its plans to ask taxpayers in Boyne City to dig into their pocketbooks to pay for the purchase of property for a new waterfront park. The change in direction comes after the Boyne City City Commission heard a promising financial report from city manager Michael Cain during its regular semi-monthly meeting Tuesday. Earlier this year, the city commission had been seriously considering placing a proposal on the November ballot that would have asked city voters to approve a property tax millage to pay for the city's portion of the cost to purchase the property at 475 N. Lake St., currently known as the Open Space park. The city has been using the 4.5-acre parcel, which includes about 600 feet of Lake Charlevoix shoreline, as a park since mid-2015. Earlier that year, area residents Mike Dow and Bob Grove purchased the site and offered to lease it to the city for $1 per year so the city could use it as a park while it pursued a means to purchase the property. Northern Homes receives $120,000 to help families buy homes
Northern Homes CDC has received a $120,000 grant from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, MSDHA, to help three local families become homeowners. Jane MacKenzie, Executive Director of Northern Homes, said "With this grant we can help 3 families purchase a home with up to $10,000 in down payment and closing cost assistance and up to $20,000 in rehabilitation costs on the home they want to buy. The home must be in the city limits of Alanson, Petoskey, Boyne City, East Jordan or Charlevoix." In 2016 Northern Homes helped Robert Merrill buy a home in Boyne City using the Homebuyer Purchase Rehab program. "Without Northern Homes I still would have bought the house, but I would have had to pinch and save for years to accommodate the needs that were so quickly fixed," Robert said. "I now own a house that's worth more, is more energy efficient, and is definitely nicer to live in. This program not only helped me, but helped update a tired house in our great town. A win-win for everyone (especially me)." To qualify, families must earn less than 80% of the area median income, based on family size and be able to qualify for a mortgage. For example, a family of 4 people purchasing a home in Emmet County can have an income no greater than $50,800. The grant funds can help a family with closing costs on the purchase and up to $25,000 in rehabilitation costs. > For more information contact Jane MacKenzie at 231-582-6244. To sign up for a Homebuyer Education Class contact Lindsey Miller at 231-582-6436.

Chamber Checks: "Shop local" gift can be used all over town
Need a gift, maybe for someone who is hard to buy for? Don't forget "Chamber Checks" are available at the Chamber Office, 28 S. Lake Street, Boyne City. Chamber Checks also make the ideal "shop local" gift that can be redeemed at many businesses in the Boyne area. Chamber Checks are issued through Charlevoix State Bank by the Boyne Chamber and are redeemable much like a gift certificate or traveler's check. Chamber Checks make a great gift and encourage purchases at our member businesses. A person can choose where and when to use Chamber Checks, redeeming them at local restaurants, shops, or for professional services. Chamber Checks function like community-wide gift certificates. Chamber Checks are sold exclusively at the Boyne Chamber office in denominations of $10 and $20 and now we've added $25 certificates too! We appreciate advance notice for large orders.
QUESTIONS? If you have questions about Chamber Checks or Boyne Bucks, call the Chamber at 231-582-6222 or email missy@boynechamber.com.
