What To Do If You Discover a Sick Bird
How to protect yourself from mosquito-spread viruses
In light of diseased birds being reported in Antrim county earlier this week, are you wondering what to do if you see a sick or deceased bird? After tests by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), these birds were found to be infected with mosquito-spread viruses, West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).
Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) and the DNR are encouraging residents to report sick or diseased birds or other animals by going to https://www2.dnr.state.mi.us/ors/Survey/4 or calling or texting (517) 336-5030. Follow the instructions on the DNR website and do not move the bird from its location. HDNW does not collect birds for testing.
Protect Yourself and Your Pets
HDNW is here to provide residents with information on how to best protect themselves.
“Based on the DNR’s lab results, we know that birds in the area are infected with these viruses,” says Dan Thorell, HDNW Health Officer. “While there’s no need to panic, we are encouraging people to do limit exposure to the mosquitos and to report any suspicious birds to the DNR.”
WNV is the leading cause of mosquito-spread disease in the continental U.S. About one in five people who are infected, develop a fever and other symptoms while others do not feel sick. Although rare, EEE is one of the most dangerous mosquito-spread diseases in the U.S., with a
33% fatality rate among people who become ill. The fatality rate in birds and other animals varies.
To protect yourself from mosquito bites:
• Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-approved products, to exposed skin or clothing, and always follow the manufacturer’s directions for use.
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors. Apply insect repellent to clothing to help prevent bites.
• Avoid being outside during peak mosquito activity between dusk and dawn.
• Use windows and doors with well-maintained screens.
• Empty water from mosquito breeding sites around the home, such as buckets, unused kiddie pools, old tires, or similar sites where mosquitoes may lay eggs.
• Use nets and/or fans over outdoor seating areas.
To protect animals:
• Put farm animals in the barn during peak mosquito activity from dusk to dawn.
• Check with your vet on whether EEE vaccinations are available for your animals.
• Use an insect repellant on the animals approved for the species.
• Again, eliminate standing water on your property.

More Blue Elect PlusSM POS plan options available for 2025
Blue Care Network is offering more Blue Elect PlusSM point-of-service plan options for 2025 to both fully insured and self-funded employers.
Many POS plans mirror PPO plan designs
POS plans are popular with groups because they combine the managed care and affordability of an HMO with more provider flexibility. Members enjoy the convenience of not needing referrals and can choose providers in or out of network. Coverage is available for members living in or outside Michigan.
For large groups, BCN added six new Blue Elect Plus POS plans, for a total of 10 menu options for 2025. And for small groups, five new POS plans and nine total menu options are available.
New HRA options
Also new for 2025, groups can benefit from the affordability and convenience of our POS plans paired with an employer-funded, BCN-administered health reimbursement arrangement. Large groups may pair any Blue Elect Plus POS plan with our BCN HRA. Small groups now have two new Blue Elect Plus HRASM POS Gold plan options.
If you’re looking for more consumer-directed health plan options, Blue Elect Plus HSASM POS plans are also available for large and small groups.

Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital Ranked One of the Best in Michigan for Physician Communication, Patient Recommendation
Charlevoix, Mich – Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital is one of nine hospitals in Michigan, and 394 nationally, to receive a 5-star ranking for Physician Communication from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2024.
- With over 4,600 hospitals in the United States, this puts Charlevoix Hospital in the top 9% of hospitals for excellence in physician communication.
- Additionally, Charlevoix Hospital earned a 5-star CMS rating for Patient Recommendations, a distinction only 464 hospitals nationally received, with only nine in Michigan. This ranks Charlevoix Hospital in the top 10% in the country for patient recommendations.
“The recognition of Charlevoix Hospital from a patient standpoint, on physician communication and care received, is a testament to our commitment to putting the patients’ needs and concerns first,” said Joanne Schroeder, president and CEO, Charlevoix Hospital. “I want to applaud our providers for their efforts to partner with patients on their healthcare journey while continuing to maintain a high-level of quality care.”
CMS ratings are based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. HCAHPS is a national, standardized survey of hospital patients about their experiences during a recent inpatient hospital stay. The physician communication star rating and patient experience ratings combines data from three HCAHPS survey questions and summarizes how well patients feel that their physicians explained things clearly, listened carefully to them, and treated them with courtesy and respect.

This sweet senior is Azazle, also known as Azzy. Azazle came to us as a transfer from the Saginaw area and he is ready to say goodbye to the city life and focus on a life of relaxion in good ole Northern Michigan. Azazle is a calm and gentle guy and would do in a quiet home. He enjoys beds and naps like most senior citizens and does seem to walk well on a leash.
As is the case with many senior shepherds, Azzy does have some hip issues and is on some medication for pain management. He is also hard of hearing. He seems to be tolerant of other dogs that give him his space and we believe he would do well with cats. He does not like small dogs.
