FEEDING NORTHERN MICHIGAN CAMPAIGN RAISES $16,398

The Covid-19 crisis hit Northern Michigan hard and has put tremendous pressure on area food banks. So MacDonald Garber Broadcasting stations decided it was time to help. The week of May 18th became Feeding Northern Michigan Week and 106KHQ, Lite 96.3, 104.5 BOB FM and 96.7 The Bull all came together to fill the pantries of three area food banks.

All of the on air personalities got involved on a personal level, talking to listeners and finding ways to encourage donations. The morning shows dedicated one whole day to sharing stories, Lite 96.3 midday personality Heather Leigh’s 8 year old daughter got into her piggy bank and went on air to challenge all area school kids to do the same and the 104.5 BOB-FM morning show grabbed drive by donations. Dean Armstrong of the Bull morning show challenged all his listeners to meet his donation.

Robby Bridges, 106KHQ program director said “Radio can make a big difference in the communities they serve and it was extra special to see the listeners of a heritage top 40 like 106 KHQ help us help others!” Mark Elliott, of the Lite 96.3 Breakfast Show added “It’s not easy right now, with lots of folks hurting and needing help. Any other time, I would have parked myself and the mic on top of a truck in some parking lot asking for food donations, but we couldn’t do that. So I can’t thank our listeners and advertisers enough for their support and donations to our ‘virtual’ food drive."

Diane Shannon Hansell, MGB Operations Manager coordinated the event. “I really wanted to raise $10,000. But once we started on air, the communities all came to together and we have $16,398 to give to area food banks. I’m so grateful to the staff for getting behind this and our to listeners and corporate partners for being so generous. It truly was amazing.”

The Manna Food Project, Father Fred Foundation and Feeding America Northwest Michigan will all benefit. For more information, Diane Shannon Hansell is available at 231-347-8713 or at Diane@lite96.com.

BOYNE CITY MAIN STREET SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN FOCUSES ON SHOPPING LOCAL THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

A statewide social media campaign kicks off this week to help area shoppers focus their holiday gift-buying on local businesses. Using the hashtag #ShopSmallOnMainSt, Michigan Main Streets are spreading the word in their communities about the benefits of shopping local.

The #ShopSmallOnMainSt social campaign will formally launch on “Small Business Saturday” (November 28). The campaign is designed to help local retailers leverage the power of social media to build enthusiasm for shopping with Boyne City-based businesses.

Local business owners are among the most creative marketers, and their enthusiasm for reaching customers online is contagious. Small Business Saturday is a meaningful way for the community to support small businesses through shopping, ordering take out and sharing their experiences on social media.

Plus, in the midst of the global pandemic, social media is flexible in connecting local shoppers with local businesses.

In addition to Boyne City, at least 24 Michigan Main Streets are expected to participate in #ShopSmallOnMainSt in 2020. Main Street communities stand out through their dedication to building stronger communities and preservation-based economic development.

Our local Main Streets reflect this dedication to community. The social media initiative was created to promote this dedication and the “shop local” message.
ETA NU “DRESS FOR CHILL” PROJECT
WRAPS BOYNE CITY CHILDREN IN WARMTH

Another winter is upon us and, thanks to Eta Nu’s Dress for Chill program, 167 children from Boyne City Elementary, the Early Learners and Head Start programs have new winter clothing and boots to keep them warm in the frigid months ahead.
This annual project, now in its thirteenth year, is organized and executed by many volunteers from Eta Nu. Members shop, store, organize and ultimately “dress” the children with all new jackets, snow pants, boots, hats and mittens. Charlotte Battjes ably chaired this committee again this year. She and her volunteers faced several new challenges in 2020: securing a new facility to store and sort the clothing; the closing of J C Penney in Petoskey, one of the group’s main sources of affordable clothing; pandemic protocols that affected how the group of women were able to work together; new COVID-related procedures for actually “dressing” the children; and of course, the greater need in our community due to the economic downturn affecting so many.
Dress for Chill is truly a community-wide project. Funds for this huge undertaking come solely from local donations. All monies donated go directly toward the clothing purchases. Although we were unable to engage in a few fundraising procedures that were available to us in the past – specifically donation canisters in downtown stores and collections at the Farmers’ Market and Harvest Festival – we were once again blessed with the support of so many local organizations, businesses, and individuals. We recognize and thank the following for their very generous donations:
FOE Aerie 1583
FOE Aerie Ladies Auxiliary
Hulsman Family Fund through the Charlevoix Community Foundation
Kiwanis Club
Knights of Columbus
Pat O’Brien and Associates
Rotary Club of Boyne City
St. Matthews Church
Stowe Family Fund through the Charlevoix Community Foundation
Women Who Care, a philanthropic group of Charlevoix and Emmet County women

We also thank the people in our community who donated individually to the project.

Eta Nu is proud to be able to help our children in need. Dress for Chill is our biggest undertaking and we could not accomplish this important project with out the help of the staff at Boyne City Elementary School and Early Learners program, the generous donations from our local organizations and individuals, and the support of our entire community. THANK YOU!

DAVE KRING CAMPAIGN "FILL THE 38"
TOYS FOR TOTS

Dave Kring Chevrolet Cadillac has a classic twist on the Toys for Tots drive this year. We’re driving to fill our 1938 Chevy Pickup displayed on the show floor with new, unopened gifts for children of all ages. The donated gifts will be collected on December 17th by the local Salvation Army and distributed within the community where needed most. Things really light up around the dealership in December with an abundance of gratitude and goodwill! Partnership with Toys for Tots is such a great way to share that spirit with the community. In 2019 we saw a record number of gift donations and invite our customers and community to help meet our goal this year and fill the ’38. Merry Christmas to all!
