| Here's the 2017 Leadership graduation class. |
19 graduate as leadership program completes 6th year
Leadership Charlevoix County completed its sixth year May 17th with a graduation ceremony for 19 class members at Boyne Mountain Resort, which sponsored the event.
"It has been a memorable 10 months working with this leadership class," said Leadership board president Mary Faculak of the East Jordan Chamber of Commerce. "We have 19 engaged individuals who are already making a positive difference in our county. I encourage and invite our clubs, organizations and groups in Charlevoix County to invite these graduates and all of our LCC alumni to join them."
Faculak and Alison Hubbard of the Charlevoix Area Chamber are co-coordinators of the program. "Charlevoix County is lucky to have the knowledge and drive that these leaders possess," Hubbard said. "With the success of their Community Service Project and recent graduation, the potential for this class of leaders is endless."
There are now a total of 93 graduates of the leadership program, which was started by the Boyne City, East Jordan and Charlevoix Chambers of Commerce with funding assistance from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation.
The graduates were addressed by keynote speaker Dr. Gretchen Carroll, Associate Dean of Business, Manufacturing & Technology at North Central Michigan College. "Leadership isn't a position," Dr. Carroll said. "It's not a title, it's not a degree and it doesn't require fame or fortune. Leadership is a disposition and it's not for the faint of heart. Leadership is a relationship - and requires a strong connection between leaders and their constituents."
The class chose two of its members to speak for them at their graduation ceremony. Emily Selph expressed her thanks "
for providing an amazing program, which has given us an opportunity to embark, both individually and as a class, on this journey, this chance to come together as strangers, to connect, to grow, and to accomplish something that will truly make a difference."
Savanah Cool urged her classmates to "continue to learn, grow and lead. Continue to invest in yourself, to take time for you, to step outside your comfort zone, to learn more about yourself, to develop your knowledge/understanding and skills, to set professional goals and identify opportunities to make a positive impact in our community."

Ashley Julin wins hunt with 49 morels in 90 minutes
 |
|
Ashley Julin,a Commerce Township resident pictured at right posing with festival mascot Woody Pickme, is this year's grand champion mushroom hunter. In the
57th National Morel Mushroom Festival
competitive hunt, Ashley found 49 morels in 90 minutes, winning $100 and a carved morel trophy. Although Ashley is an experienced morel hunter, this was her first time competing in the National Morel Hunt. How was it? "
The event was well organized," Ashley said. "The hunt itself was thrilling, and the morels elusive. The rumors are true, this was my first time entering the contest. It was a little intimidating knowing how many people were return competitors."
At left in the photo, Donna Smith was the senior citizen champion. Other top pickers:
MEN - Brian Magnuson took first place with 36 morels and won $50, Brenton Weaver had 26 morels for second place, and Tom Abel picked 19 morels for third place.
WOMEN - Patricia Hisler found 28 morels for first place and $50, Randi Birkenmeier 19 morels for second place and Kim Phillips 18 morels for third place.

Boyne Valley trail project progresses toward 2018 opening
From the Petoskey News-Review: An effort to create a non-motorized trail linking Boyne City and Boyne Falls reached another major milestone recently when the contract for the trail's engineering work was approved. The trail is an effort that has been in discussions for many years to create a non-motorized trail between Boyne City and Boyne Falls, primarily along the former railroad route that runs between the two communities on the north side of M-75 South. The plan calls for the 7.2-mile project to be completed in two phases. The first phase is a 3.6-mile segment that will run roughly in the corridor between the Boyne River and M-75, starting with a trailhead at the Boyne City Municipal Airport, running behind the industrial park near the river, and then mostly following a former railroad grade to Dam Road where another trailhead and parking area is planned. Full story.

Merchants plan 'On-Land Poker Crawl' for Boyne Thunder
Downtown merchants are encouraged to participate in a new event tentatively called the "On-Land Poker Crawl" on Boyne Thunder Saturday, July 8th. The large crowds that are in town for the boating event will be invited to pick up a poker crawl flier with the names of participating businesses. The event starts immediately after the Boyne Thunder on-water boat parade around 11 a.m. on July 8th. When a shopper purchases something at a participating store or restaurant, they get to pull one card from a deck of cards that is provided to each business. The cashier will write their card on their poker flier, certifying it with a stamp. The participant does not keep the card; it will go back into the deck.
The goal of the day is for the participants to spend money at 5 places, receiving 5 different cards, which creates a poker hand. If more than 5 purchases are made, no problem - the more purchases the better! Participants must turn in their fliers before 5 p.m. at designated collection points, and let us know if your store would like to be a collection point. At 5 p.m., the person with the best poker hand will win $50 in Chamber cash, a grand prize gift basket and Boyne Thunder garb. If your business would like to participate, contact Promotions Committee Chair Karen Guzniczak by email at cnt90@att.net by June 23. If you would like to donate something for the grand prize, email Main Street director Kelsie King-Duff at mainstreet@boynecity.com. The winner will be announced on the Main Street Facebook page and website.

First Stroll the Streets is just two weeks away
 |
|
The first Stroll the Streets of the summer will be June 9 and will run every Friday evening through September 1. Here is the schedule.
Stroll the Streets is Boyne City Main Street's flagship event for our community - enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors. The positive image this event creates is invaluable to us all and impossible to put a price tag on.
What other event brings thousands of people to Boyne City on 13 Friday evenings throughout the season to dine at our many restaurants, shop in our stores, enjoy ice cream, dream about a second home - and come back the next day, next week, or next year to do it again?
We will enjoy another 13-week season in 2017. Last year, we hired over 75 bands throughout the season with an investment of $18,000 to entertain the crowds.
That success is because of our local businesses
. Their contributions make Stroll the Streets possible. We thank them for their past support and hope we can count on you to help again this summer. With your investment in Stroll the Streets you are supporting a great event and we will do our best to recognize your support to the thousands of people visiting our businesses and strolling our streets.
For planning purposes we are asking you to let us know your level of support as soon as possible by returning the enclosed sponsorship form. Payment is not due until July 1. Stroll donation form (PDF).
Thank You, Kelsie King-Duff
