Bird in Antrim County Infected with Eastern Equine Encephalitis

Residents asked to protect themselves from mosquito bites

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) was informed that a sick fledgling osprey was found near the Central Lake Elementary School baseball field. Within 24 hours of being taken to a wildlife rehabilitator, the osprey died and was taken to the Michigan Department of Natural Resource’s lab for testing. It was found to be infected with Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

When discovered, the osprey was about 200 yards from the nest, unable to fly, dazed, and wandering. The nest was on top of lights at the baseball field behind the school. Infection in both people and animals occurs through the bite of an infected mosquito. This discovery indicates that the EEE virus is here in northern Michigan.

Be Proactive

Residents are being reminded by HDNW to protect themselves from mosquito bites, as people can also become infected. EEE is one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in the U.S., with a 33 percent fatality rate among people who become ill. The fatality rate in birds and other animals varies.

EEE is not spread person-to-person. Signs of EEE include the sudden onset of fever, chills, and body and joint aches. Illness can eventually develop into severe encephalitis, which involves swelling in the brain caused by infection or an autoimmune response. It can also result in headache, disorientation, tremors, seizures, and paralysis. Permanent brain damage, coma, and death may occur in some cases.

More Blue Elect PlusSM POS plan options available for 2025

Blue Care Network is offering more Blue Elect PlusSM point-of-service plan options for 2025 to both fully insured and self-funded employers.

Many POS plans mirror PPO plan designs

POS plans are popular with groups because they combine the managed care and affordability of an HMO with more provider flexibility. Members enjoy the convenience of not needing referrals and can choose providers in or out of network. Coverage is available for members living in or outside Michigan.

For large groups, BCN added six new Blue Elect Plus POS plans, for a total of 10 menu options for 2025. And for small groups, five new POS plans and nine total menu options are available.

New HRA options

Also new for 2025, groups can benefit from the affordability and convenience of our POS plans paired with an employer-funded, BCN-administered health reimbursement arrangement. Large groups may pair any Blue Elect Plus POS plan with our BCN HRA. Small groups now have two new Blue Elect Plus HRASM POS Gold plan options.

If you’re looking for more consumer-directed health plan options, Blue Elect Plus HSASM POS plans are also available for large and small groups.

Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital Ranked One of the Best in Michigan for Physician Communication, Patient Recommendation

Charlevoix, Mich – Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital is one of nine hospitals in Michigan, and 394 nationally, to receive a 5-star ranking for Physician Communication from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2024.

  • With over 4,600 hospitals in the United States, this puts Charlevoix Hospital in the top 9% of hospitals for excellence in physician communication.
  • Additionally, Charlevoix Hospital earned a 5-star CMS rating for Patient Recommendations, a distinction only 464 hospitals nationally received, with only nine in Michigan. This ranks Charlevoix Hospital in the top 10% in the country for patient recommendations.

“The recognition of Charlevoix Hospital from a patient standpoint, on physician communication and care received, is a testament to our commitment to putting the patients’ needs and concerns first,” said Joanne Schroeder, president and CEO, Charlevoix Hospital. “I want to applaud our providers for their efforts to partner with patients on their healthcare journey while continuing to maintain a high-level of quality care.”

CMS ratings are based on the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. HCAHPS is a national, standardized survey of hospital patients about their experiences during a recent inpatient hospital stay. The physician communication star ratingand patient experience ratings combines data from three HCAHPS survey questions and summarizes how well patients feel that their physicians explained things clearly, listened carefully to them, and treated them with courtesy and respect.

🐕︎ Pet of the Week 🐈︎

This pretty lady is Janice, this girl isn't just beautiful, she has the smarts to go with it! Janice found herself with us due to no fault of her own. We are still figuring out this sweet girl, but so far we know that she does well on walks, knows a couple basic commands and is very likely housebroken. Janice does not do well with other dogs and would have to be adopted into an only dog household. She has taken a walk around our cat room and seems alright with cats, but we are unsure of exactly how well she would do living with any. A home without small children would be best as Janice can be sensitive of her tail being touched.
