NCMC LIBRARY HOSTS “FOUR HUMORS” SHAKESPEARE EXHIBIT

Explore the intersection of literature and early medicine through September 27

PETOSKEY, Mich. — The North Central Michigan College Library announces the opening of the traveling exhibit “And there’s the humor of it!” Shakespeare and the Four Humors, free to the public through September 27. This engaging exhibit explores the relationship between William Shakespeare’s literary genius and the ancient theory of the four bodily humors — blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm — and their profound influence on the author's works and character development.

The exhibit invites visitors of all ages to enjoy a fascinating blend of literature, history, and early medical theory. Visitors can determine their own dominant humor with a temperament test inspired by online psychometric assessments. Participants will also receive exclusive stickers representing each of the four bodily humors, providing a fun and personalized souvenir from their visit.

Shannone Dunlap Elected Chair of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Board of Directors

Shannone Dunlap, Director of Business Development for Black Diamond Broadcast Group in Central and Northern Michigan, was elected Chair of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) Board of Directors during the organization’s Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

"Celebrating 75 years at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island was a dazzling reminder of the legacy the MAB has built and the bright future we have ahead. And while the week was well spent meeting new faces and remembering our past, my takeaway from conversations and conferences is this — we have work to do. I am grateful for the direction of our board, from outgoing chair Debbie Petersmark whose tremendous leadership has brought us to today. And, I look forward to digging in with the new board for the year ahead and working alongside the bold leadership of our new chair, Shannone Dunlap," MAB President/CEO, Casey Jones said. "Together, we will meet the challenges ahead with the same passion and dedication that have guided us for 75 years. And 75 years from now, the MAB will be celebrating the work we do together, today."

Dunlap is the 79th chair of the MAB, one of the largest and most successful state broadcast associations in the nation which represents more than 300 radio and television stations and more than 3,000 individual broadcasting industry employees across the state of Michigan.

"Our local, state & federal political representatives can be and should be our BIGGEST advocates," said Dunlap. "In short, we need them. We need them to think of us first, engage with us first and value local broadcasters as the primary way to reach their constituents. We also need to tell our story to the masses for our industry, local radio and local television stories! Focus on trust and credibility- staying relative & engaged with our communities old & young. Be where they are, including non-viewers and non-listeners alike. Embracing new strategies that leverage our strengths and be thought of first in our local communities. Together our voices are louder, let's tell our stories loud & proud, together!"

FRIENDS OF THE BOYNE RIVER PRESENTS:

Wednesday, September 11th at 7pm

Boyne City City Hall, Commission Chambers

HEALING WATERS - A HISTORY OF THE BOYNE RIVER

Speaker: Patrick McCleary, Charlevoix

County History Preservation Society

The Boyne River was named for Ireland’s River Boyne. Today it is known for its beauty, its wildlife, and the fantastic fishing opportunities it offers anglers of all ages. There are, however, other notable details about the river that some may not be aware of. Through the use of early photographs and historic detail, we will take a look back at how early pioneers put the river to practical use; harnessed the energy that the falls provided, and even rerouted the river’s original path to better suit their needs.

Long-time local historian, genealogist and archivist, Patrick McCleary, will speak on the subject, drawing references from his own studies as well as original photographs from his own and other’s collections that might otherwise not be seen by the general public. This presentation is free to anyone with an interest in our remarkable Boyne River and all are encouraged to attend.

Great Lakes Energy Members Elect Three Board Directors

Boyne City, MI - Great Lakes Energy (GLE) members recently elected three board members to the cooperative’s board of directors. Election results were announced at the cooperative’s annual business meeting on Aug. 21, 2024.

In District 1, incumbent director Dave Coveyou of Petoskey was reelected, receiving 795 votes in an uncontested race.

In District 2, incumbent director Mark Carson of Boyne City prevailed over challenger Mark Battista of Boyne Falls, by a 663-290 margin.

In District 7, incumbent Paul Byl of Shelby was reelected, receiving 600 votes in an uncontested race.

GLE members in voting Districts 1 (Emmet County), 2 (Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties), and 7 (Muskegon and Oceana counties) received their mail-in ballots in the July/August issue of Michigan Country Lines magazine. This year’s election marked the second year members had the option of voting online. Instructions for online voting were included with the mail-in ballots. GLE’s election management vendor, Survey and Ballot Systems of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, processed both online and mail-in ballots. The election concluded on Aug. 15 and results were announced at the cooperative’s annual business meeting on Aug. 21 at its headquarters in Boyne City.

Unlike investor-owned utilities, GLE is a not-for-profit business owned by its consumer-members. Board members are elected to three-year terms by members, not staff, with each member’s vote carrying equal weight. The cooperative conducts an annual meeting to update members on the progress made during the past year and to announce the results of director elections.

GLE provides electricity to nearly 130,000 rural members in 26 counties along the western side of the Lower Peninsula. Visit gtlakes.com for more information.

Raven Hill Discovery Center, incorporated in 1991, is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation.

Mission: Raven Hill provides a place that enhances hands-on and lifelong learning for all ages by connecting science, history & the arts.

Time has a way of slipping through our fingers. One moment we’re looking ahead at days, weeks and months stretching out before us, and the next, they’ve all but disappeared in the rearview mirror. It’s odd how days can feel so long in the moment, yet when we look back, months or even years seem to have passed in the blink of an eye. But here at Raven Hill, the time has come! All of our planning and preparation is behind us. Fuller Road closes tomorrow and Raven Hill’s Pop-up Museum opens in the Open Space located before the bridge construction with entrance to the Pop-up Museum on Pearsall Road just past the junction of Fuller and Pearsall! We invite you to visit and check out our museum “under the tents”! For more information, call 231.536.3369 or email info@miravenhill.org

Raven Hill Discovery Center has been at the forefront of educational exhibits in northern Michigan, since its inception in 1992. The new exhibit, Under Michigan & Beyond is dedicated to Tim Leach, co-founder of Raven Hill. “He’s the first guy who taught me anything about rocks and I’ll certainly never forget that.” –Andrew Sasso, Senior Project Geoscientist at Rio Tinto Exploration.

🐕︎ Pet of the Week 🐈︎

This big headed fella is Duke! Duke was found wandering as a stray in really rough shape. He was missing most of the fur on his back end and clearly hadn't been given the love he deserves in quite some time. A good samaritan brought Duke in to us where we were able to work on getting him on medications to help his skin, as well as getting him vaccinated and flea free. He is doing so much better now and his hair is even beginning to grow back in, we couldn't be more pleased with his improvement.

Duke is a big lover who always wants to be around his people, he is very polite on a leash and could be walked by just about anyone. Despite his appearance upon arrival, we do believe Duke had a home at one point because he seems to know some basic commands and even seems to be housetrained. He also seems to enjoy other dog's company and would likely do well with cats. Duke is a very gentle boy and would do well in almost any home. He does have a bit of separation anxiety so he would do best in a home where he would not be left for long periods of time. Whether you're a big dog lover or not, Duke is sure to win your heart as soon as you meet him, please consider adopting or fostering this handsome boy, he sure deserves it!
