Outdoor Beerdsman is expanding to include The Hoppy Hound Coffee & Dog Bakery.

The Hoppy Hound Coffee & Dog Bakery will soon be opening at 118 Water Street, with support from Boyne City Main Street and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Michigan Main Street Match on Main grant. Ivette Lopez, owner of Outdoor Beerdsman, will be expanding her store in downtown Boyne City to open The Hoppy Hound, which will feature an array of coffee and espresso beverages, as well as gourmet dog bakery items. 

"Outdoor Beerdsman looks forward to expanding our footprint in downtown Boyne City, with the addition of The Hoppy Hound," Ivette Lopez said.  

Match on Main is a reimbursement grant program that provides a unique opportunity for new and expanding businesses located in Main Street districts. The grant provides funding to Select or Master level Michigan Main Street programs to support small business owners as they explore ways to improve the interior space.

"Boyne City Main Street couldn't be happier for Ivette and Outdoor Beerdsman on her expansion to The Hoppy Hound in downtown Boyne City. This is a great example of the support Main Street is able to provide to small businesses," said Kelsie King-Duff, Boyne City Main Street Executive Director. 

The MEDC finds value in supporting place-based businesses located in Michigan Main Street districts, given the local capacity that has been built to support new and existing small businesses through the technical assistance, training and education provided by the Michigan Main Street program. There is a benefit to the community to activate vacant or underutilized space, attract new customers, and overall support a vibrant downtown district.

Exhibitor registration is now open for the Boyne Area Chamber's Business & Community Expo on Friday, November 1st, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The Expo is a partnership with Boyne City High School, held in the school gymnasium from 3-7 p.m. with exhibitor networking from 3-4 p.m. before opening to the public from 4-7 p.m.  Booth prices are  $200 for a business and $150 for a 501(c)3 nonprofit,  including an 8-ft. table and two chairs. Exhibitors must be Boyne Chamber members. 

The Expo is traditionally our largest networking event of the year, giving exhibitors exposure to hundreds of local residents and business people in attendance.

The Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce and The Boyne City Gazette are hosting a City Commission Candidates Forum at 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 28 in the Commission Chambers of Boyne City Hall. Three candidates are running for two positions in the November 5th election - incumbents Hugh Conklin and Tom Neidhamer and challenger Barbara Young. All three candidates have confirmed that they will attend the forum. Chamber Executive Director Kim Akin and Gazette Publisher Chris Faulknor will be moderators asking questions of the candidates. The candidates will also make opening and closing statements. Boyne City Hall is located at  319 N. Lake St.

Boyne City Main Street is pleased to announce the launch of a downtown recycling program. The organization, with support from the City of Boyne City Department of Public Works, will be running a pilot program for 6 weeks through November 8th. If successful, the organization plans for a full roll-out for Summer 2020. 

Visitors to downtown should look for the blue recycle barrels at four locations. These include the southwest corner of Water Street at Park Street, the northeast and southwest corners of Water Street at Lake Street, and the southwest corner of Ray Street at Lake Street.

Boyne City Main Street would like to thank Charlevoix County for the use of the blue recycle bins. 

Data will be collected during the pilot on the percentage of recyclable material collected. Be sure to recycle while visiting downtown Boyne City, and encourage others to do the same, to help the pilot be successful!

Our condolences to the family of long-time local pharmacist Bob Huff, who passed away on September 29th. A celebration of life will be held at a time and place that will be announced on the Huff Pharmacy Facebook Page. Here is the post announcing his death on that page:

"As many of you have heard, Bob Huff has passed away. This wild, crazy, funny, compassionate, generous, hard-working man will be missed by so many people. He was not just a local pharmacist, but was his customers' champion when they were struggling to get their meds paid for by insurance, and you never wanted to hear how he felt about insurance companies - a conversation that would last FOREVER! But it was because he truly cared. He supported, donated, sponsored, so many causes I can't even remember. He was so passionate about keeping our community beautiful, and was the driving force, and builder of the 462 steps at Avalanche Preserve. If you were one of the fortunate people to work in the store, there was never a dull moment. He was the best guy to work for, and considered your family part of his. I could go on forever about the crazy antics, wearing sandals in the winter, conversations, and his kind, gentle nature, but if you knew Bob... you already know."

	The promo tour will bring lots of classic cars to downtown Boyne City.

Boyne City has been selected as a host city for the 2020 Back to the Bricks Promo Tour. The tour, which features up to 350 cars, will be making its way to downtown Boyne City on June 7, 2020.

"Boyne City Main Street looks forward to hosting Back to the Bricks next summer. There couldn't be a better way to kick off the summer and bring people to downtown Boyne City," Boyne City Main Street Executive Director Kelsie King-Duff said.

According to the Back to the Bricks website, each June the Promo Tour ushers in a summer of cruising and car shows, and offers an opportunity for adventure and camaraderie to hundreds of classic car owners. The six-day tour has a dual purpose: (1) to promote Back to the Bricks®, and generate excitement for the August "Main Event" in downtown Flint, and (2) to showcase the unique features and boost the economy of each of the host cities selected for the tour.

The tour is in its 11th year, and will make stops in five host cities. The Back to the Bricks Promotional Tour stopped in Boyne City in 2015 as well.  More information on the time of the event and event details will be released soon.

Kristine and Ed Brehm are about the snip the ribbon at the grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Provisons Wine Lounge Friday. The Wine Lounge recently opened at 123 Water Street, next door with a connecting doorway to their sister businesses, The Wine Emporium and Deli and Boyne Country Provisions. They announced their new "Happy Hours" promotion from 4 to 6 p.m., 7 days a week. The Boyne Area Chamber is looking for a new board member to fill a vacancy at the end of the year. "We thank Shari Culver for her service on the board for the past three years, including some of that time as an officer," said Executive Director Kim Akin. "We want to make sure that our board is diverse and that as many areas of our business community as possible are represented in our board makeup," she said.

This board vacancy will be filled in January, and the new board member will be invited to participate in a planning session in November or December. Bulmann Dock & Lift will hold an open house this Saturday, Oct. 5, to celebrate a major expansion of their facility and 21 years of service to the community. The open house will be from 2 to 6 p.m. with a local 4-H pig roast served at 3 p.m. 

"Help us break in our new building with a party!" their invitation says. "We welcome all our friends, neighbors, and affiliated businesses to come and celebrate with us." Those who attend will meet their team, enjoy great food and drink and play games like corn-hole and ladder ball. 

Bulmann expanded their 25,000 sq. ft. building with a 17,000 sq. ft. addition that will house all of their dock and lift fabrication. The current building will be used for assembly and warehousing. The company now has 40 employees and plans to add another 15 this coming spring. They were honored by Michigan Celebrates Business as one of 50 Michigan Companies to Watch in 2018.

Sales and Marketing Director Chris Binger said Bulmann's business has been very strong the past few years as the company has expanded its sales beyond Northern Michigan to downstate Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

	Kathy Huschke, Executive Director of the Oleson Foundation and Shari Schult, McLaren Northern Michigan Vice President of Operations, view the new hospital wing taking shape after Huschke presented Schult with a check for $25,000, the first half of a $50,000 matching grant.

The Oleson Foundation presented a $25,000 check to the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation for the first installment in a matching grant for the Building the Future of Health Care Capital Campaign. The second check for $25,000 will be distributed in January. The Oleson Foundation wanted to support the construction project and liked the idea of offering a matching grant to inspire community giving. For every $1 received from an individual and designated in support of the Building the Future of Health Care project, the Oleson Foundation agreed to match up to $50,000. More than 150 people chose to contribute to the Foundation in response to the matching gift, donating a total of $72,121 toward the project. With the gift from the Oleson Foundation, the total raised equaled $122,121. 

Construction for the project is underway. Steel beams are currently being placed to allow the structure to be enclosed by winter so that inside construction can continue. Hospice of Northwest Michigan is excited to announce its re-launch as Northwest Michigan Hospice Assist. During a time of change, Hospice of Northwest Michigan recently set forth on a journey of exploration of its roots as well as its future. The organization has a long history of community partnership in support of patients experiencing end of life. The initial non-profit agency, Charlevoix County Hospice, stemmed from a grassroots effort in 1982 and had partnered with the clinical team from the Health Department of Northwest Michigan since 2002. 

From its inception, the focus of the non-profit organization has been supporting people caring for loved ones with advanced illness in their homes through non-medical volunteer assistance. Earlier this year, the Board of Directors and Executive Director Jeanne Marriott engaged in a strategic planning process. When reviewing their key components, core values and gaps in end-of-life care within our communities, the mission emerged.

While the agency's name will be new - Northwest Michigan Hospice Assist (or simply, Hospice Assist) - their goal is to remain a non-medical hospice agency that can provide support to people caring for their loved ones. In addition, Marriott said they will continue to be the "go-to source" for grief support, thanks to the work of David Behling. She added, "David is a well-known figure in northern Lower Michigan and remains a beloved and trusted counselor to those experiencing loss of any kind."

Area high school juniors and seniors will have the opportunity once again to tour some of the region's most unique, innovative and important manufacturing facilities. Manufacturers across the country and across the street use MFG Day as an opportunity to inspire and recruit the next generation of manufacturers.Tours will take place October 8, 9 and 10 during school hours at several locations throughout Charlevoix, Antrim, Cheboygan and Emmet counties. The City of Boyne City has openings on the City Planning Commission, as well as other boards and commissions. The openings on the Planning Commission were created when long-time members Joe St. Dennis and George Ellwanger announced they would be retiring from the commission. Library executive director Monica Kroondyk was appointed to the planning commission recently. Anyone interested can find more information and the application form here.

North Central Michigan College invites high school juniors and seniors and their parents to College Night, Thursday, October 10. The event will be held on the Petoskey campus in the Student and Community Resource Center from 6-7:30 p.m. An "open house" format encourages attendees to drop in anytime during the event.

High school students and their parents can meet with representatives from more than 50 public and private colleges and universities from throughout the Midwest about higher education options, admission requirements, programs of study, costs of college, campus activities and residence life. Armed Forces representatives will also be available. A North Central financial aid advisor will be present to answer questions about federal financial aid for college. Representatives will also provide valuable information for current North Central students who plan to transfer to a four-year university for completion of a bachelor's degree. 

The program is offered to the community by North Central as a free service for students and families, with additional support from the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

North Central Michigan College offers 8-hour grant-writing class 

Corporate and Community Education (CCE) of North Central Michigan College is offering an eight-hour class on The ABC's of Grant Writing. The class is to be held at the college over four evenings, taught by Maartje Nolan, Training Specialist for Corporate and Community Education, and grant writer. Sessions will be from 5:30 - 7:3 in Room 536, SCRC Building on Mondays and Wednesdays, October 21,23,28 and 30. Class fee is $135. You will need to register online with NCMC by Oct. 16th and pay at the time of registration. If you have your own laptop or iPad, be sure to bring it, so that we can do research on line and you can keep copies of the work done in class.

Employees miss work when they're sick. Getting a yearly flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your family from flu and its potentially serious complications. The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated by the end of October. The market will continue outside in Veterans Park on Saturday, Oct. 5th and 12th, moving indoors to the lobby of Boyne City Hall on Saturday, Oct.19th. The pet-friendly Annual Boyne City Halloween Parade returns to downtown on Thursday, October 31st. Lineup starts at 4:30pm along Lake Street in front of Lake Street Market. The parade will begin shortly afterwards at 4:45pm, moving north along Lake Street, turning on Water Street, turning at Park Street and ending at the First Presbyterian Church's Trunk or Treat.

After the parade, Boyne City Firefighters will be handing out treats for kids at the Fire Hall and the Bookmobile will be handing out candy and bookmarks redeemable for free books at the Boyne District Library. Trick or treating around town is from 5-8pm.

Braylon Edwards

Bear River Health and The Sports Marketing Agency present former NFL football star Braylon Edwards for a Sports Impact Luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, October 3rd, at the Talcott Center in Walloon Lake. Edwards is a former NFL wide receiver for the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. He played college  football for the University of Michigan, earning unanimous All-American  honors. Edwards is a strong advocate for mental health services and substance abuse prevention. He will have a meet and greet at the luncheon and will speak about the dangers of student athletes with injuries and prescription drugs. There is no charge and lunch will be provided.

Boyne Meets Broadway tickets are now on sale for performances on Friday & Saturday, Nov. 22-23. Seating begins at 5:30 with a fabulous meal provided by the Boyne City High School Hospitality Department starting at 6 pm. 

A 90-minute Broadway revue will begin around 7:30 followed by dessert and coffee in the Commons. 

Tickets are $25 per person, and this event always sells out. Checks can be made to BCHS Drama. You will not want to miss this incredible event showcasing 70 of our BCHS students.

Stiggs Brewery's next "Pint and Paint" is scheduled for Thursday, October 3rd from 6 - 9 p.m. in the basement of the brewery. The theme is "Fall Pumpkins" with instruction by Cynthia Kujawski as participants will learn how to paint "still life." All materials are provided. Class fee is $25 including a glass of beer or wine. Robin Lee Berry has a dream. She'd like to help create a North Country Hemingway Festival, possibly starting in 2022 and including Boyne City, Petoskey, Walloon Lake and Charlevoix. The idea started when she worked with local documentary filmmaker George Colburn, who asked her to write and perform the theme song for the "Young Hemingway and His Enduring Eden" film. Berry, local historian Ed May and Scott MacKenzie are now organizing a Young Hemingway Portal event for Saturday, October 5th.

A cast of local residents (in early 1900s period costume) will give short performances at 8 or 9 locations around the downtown area. At each location, tales of young Ernie's pre-World War I adventures in Boyne City - be they from gossip, hearsay or rumour - will be initiated by postman Scott McKenzie.

The event will begin at 12 Noon at Freshwater Art Gallery, 217 S Lake St., and is expected to last until 4 p.m.  You can start or stop touring at any location.  At 4:15, a social hour begins at Freshwater, hosted by the owners, Robin Lee Berry and her husband Tony Williams.

It's officially fall, and that means the Boyne Valley Garden Club is taking orders in their annual Holiday Wreath & Garland Sale. A link to the order form is included here: 5 wreath sizes and 1 garland length are available. Place your order with payment on or before Saturday, November 9th. Unless other arrangements are made, plan to pick up your order at the Boyne City Eagles Hall on Thursday, November 21st, from 9AM-noon. This annual sale is the Garden Club's biggest fundraiser of the year, and proceeds are used to purchase flowers and supplies for the 12 community gardens in and around Boyne City that are planted and maintained by club volunteers. Once again, we count on your support to continue making Boyne Beautiful.

The Boyne Area Senior Center is hosting lunches on weekdays. Special events this month include an Octoberfest Party on Friday, Oct. 11, a new eyeglass clinic on Oct. 22, a Halloween Party on Thursday, Oct. 31. Live music is featured at 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday and Friday. Fit and Balance exercise classes are held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. The Silver Screen Movie Club ($4 includes movie, popcorn, drink) is held on the second Tuesday of the month.
