BRI, Lake Street Pub, Sommerset restaurants opening soon
Ed and Julie Mann, new owners of the BRI.
Three new restaurants will be opening in familiar locations the next few days with new owners, new staff and new menus. The newbies are the Boyne River Inn, Lake Street Pub and Sommerset Pointe Yacht Club.  All three are participating with special offers for Restaurant Week.
BOYNE RIVER INN will open Monday, June 4th, at 229 Water St. , and their hours will be 11 a.m. to 12 Midnight. Charlevoix restaurant owners Ed and Julie Mann acquired the Boyne River Inn from Dirk Lillie in March and they've been remodeling it since that time. They held a soft opening Tuesday and were planning to open today, but, as Julie wrote on Facebook: "We also got a late shipment of some furniture this morning, and had some new menu items we want to work on. So we are going to take the weekend to restock our food, ideas, and energy and do this right for you on Monday." News-Review story from April.
LAKE STREET PUB took over the building formerly occupied by 7 Monks Taproom and they plan to open Saturday. Their hours will be 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. They are featuring "Iconic American pub cuisine. Slow fast food made simply with care, using local ingredients when it makes sense. Featuring 24 craft and domestic beers on tap." They asked their Facebook friends to vote on what beer they'd like to have with a special price when they open, and "Short's Brewing Company's Soft Parade Shandy will be featured on tap for $2 off the first two weeks that we are open. A great big thank you to all that voted. We got some great suggestions... I also have a sneaking suspicion that Keweenaw Brewing Company's Widow Maker and PBR will make an appearance ...and don't worry we will have some nice wines in house too." News-Review story.
SOMMERSET POINTE YACHT CLUB is opening a new restaurant tonight in what was formerly known as Porter Creek Fish House, with a new name expected to be announced soon. Current hours are 5-9 p.m. for dinner, closed Mondays. As of June 14, they will be open for lunch from 11:30-3:30. You can call 231-582-9900 for reservations. Sommerset founder Fred Taylor sold the yacht club, marina, health club and restaurant earlier this year to a group of investors from the Detroit area "to ensure the vision and the means to carry on the development in the future are fulfilled." In a letter announcing the sale on April 30th, Taylor said: "I want to thank my team, of which many will remain working with the new group, as well as thank all the supporters of Sommerset Pointe.

Keep your money local by using Chamber Checks
Chamber Checks
Need a gift, maybe for someone who is hard to buy for? Don't forget "Chamber Checks" are available at the Chamber Office, 28 S. Lake Street, Boyne City. Chamber Checks also make the ideal "shop local" gift that can be redeemed at many businesses in the Boyne area. As a Chamber member, the benefit of using Chamber Checks is open to you - and we hope you will participate in this effort to keep money local. Last year the Chamber sold nearly $7,000 worth of Chamber Checks, ensuring that money is spent in our local economy.
Chamber Checks are issued through Charlevoix State Bank by the Boyne Chamber and are redeemable much like a gift certificate or traveler's check. Chamber Checks make a great gift and encourage purchases at our member businesses. A person can choose where and when to use Chamber Checks, redeeming them at local restaurants, shops, or for professional services. Chamber Checks function like community-wide gift certificates. Chamber Checks are sold exclusively at the Boyne Chamber office in denominations of $10, $20 and $25 certificates. We appreciate advance notice for large orders.

BC Gazette wins 14 awards in state newspaper contest
The Boyne City Gazette was awarded in numerous categories in this year's Michigan Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. Among the Gazette's 14 awards and honorable mentions were first place for best newspaper design and second place for newspaper of the year in the Weekly Class D category.
"I'm proud that The Boyne City Gazette was the second-place winner for Newspaper of the Year," said Publisher Chris Faulknor. "But, more so, I'm proud of the other awards and what they reflect. For example, the Spot News Story Award was the result of a photo and story about the vandalism of Family Fare, and we were the first news agency on the scene because one of our readers called us."
He added, "Every entry has a deeper story and a deeper meaning to me, that's how they made it into the contest, and I'm thrilled that a statewide agency sees the same value in our product that we do."
