Santa Parade, downtown open house, tree lighting on Friday
The Boyne City Holiday Open House and Santa Parade is a true community celebration of the season on Nov. 23, the Friday after Thanksgiving, from 5 to 9 p.m. The open house begins at 5 p.m. with refreshments at businesses throughout the downtown, and the parade starts at 6 p.m. Boyne Area Girl Scouts will light the Community Christmas Tree in Old City Park at 5 p.m. Following the tree lighting the Girl Scouts will lead holiday revelers in caroling. Santa will arrive on his horse-drawn sleigh in the parade, joined by some of his elves and reindeer from the North Pole. Those participating in the parade must send in a parade registration form and line up on East Main Street between East and Park Streets starting at 5:30 p.m. The parade route will follow Lake Street to Water Street through the heart of downtown. LIVE NATIVITY SCENE - Returning this year will be a live Nativity scene at Coldwell Banker Real Estate, 231 Water St., from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Kids can feed and pet Gunther the Camel and other animals. Hot chocolate, chili, hot dogs, coffee, cookies and sample pours from Stiggs Brewery will be provided. Details on the Nativity Scene in story below.
HOLIDAY HOURS - The Chamber office, City Hall and the Main Street offices will be closed on Thanksgiving and the next day, Friday, Nov. 23rd.

Eagles and Whi-Ski Inn to host community Thanksgiving dinners
The Boyne City Eagles will host their annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner from noon to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, at the Eagles Hall, 106 River St. The dinner is open to the public, and there is no charge. Dinner includes turkey, stuffing, potatoes and gravy, vegetables and desserts. Anyone who would like to volunteer or donate food is asked to call the Eagles in advance at 231-582-6904. Also call if you are housebound and would like a meal delivered - give us your name, address and phone. Please consider bringing a monetary donation or a non-perishable food item; proceeds will be divided among local food pantries. THE WHI-SKI INN of Boyne Falls is hosting their 3rd Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner from 1-4 p.m. We will be preparing a delicious meal with all the fixin's for anyone that would like to stop in and enjoy. The meal will be by donation of your choice or by bringing in non-perishable food items. All proceeds will benefit the Boyne Valley Food Pantry. This is "just a way to show our thanks and to give back to the community," the Whi-Ski Inn owners say. "Take a break from cooking this year and come on down for a traditional holiday dinner, watch a little football and give back to others at the same time."

Turkey Trots planned for Thanksgiving in Boyne, Charlevoix
> BOYNE CITY KIWANIS CLUB is organizing their 8th annual Turkey Trot 5K race and 1-mile fun run/walk to be held at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 22. The race will begin and end at Veterans Park, 219 N. Lake St. Packet pick-up will be the day before event from 2-6pm at Stiggs Brewery & Kitchen; enjoy $2 off a pint! Entrants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item that will be donated to Boyne area food pantries. > MUNSON CHARLEVOIX HOSPITAL has opened registration for their 8th annual 5k Turkey Trot at 8:30 on Thanksgiving morning. The run/walk starts and ends at the hospital parking lot (14700 Lake Shore Drive). Register online, in person at our Wellness Workshop (411 Bridge St., Charlevoix) or on the day of the event from 7:30-8:30 a.m. The 5k run/walk starts at 8:30. Register by November 18th to guarantee your long-sleeved t-shirt - or upgrade to a sweatshirt. Early shirt pickup available from 5-7 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the Wellness Workshop. Please bring a non-perishable food item to help support local food pantries. Costumes and leashed pets are encouraged - and you can get your photos taken at our photo booth. The Wellness Workshop will be open from 8:30-11am to serve as a warming station along the Turkey Trot route, providing hot chocolate, a warm place to rest, and use of the restroom or baby changing station as needed. You can support 15 chamber-member nonprofits on Tuesday
Giving Tuesday is quickly becoming the largest day of charitable giving for nonprofit organizations. In fact, Giving Tuesday 2017 successfully raised more than $300 million for nonprofits across the world. The campaign, which relies heavily on digital outreach, received more than one million total social media mentions and approximately 21.7 billion social media impressions. Giving Tuesday 2018 takes place on November 27th, directly following Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday.
Don't forget to post about your favorite organizations on social media, using the hashtag: #givingtuesday.

Employee housing needs survey for downtown business owners
You may have heard about the Boyne Housing Solutions initiative that is being undertaken in our community. As a part of this effort, Boyne City Main Street is surveying downtown Boyne City businesses to find out how many employees you need to add to your business. We are asking business owners or managers to please click here to take this quick survey.
Here is an example of the type of information we are looking for:
If you need 20 people full-time in the summer, answer 0 to questions 1, 2 and 4 and answer 20 to question 3.

Main Street seeks downtown sidewalk snow removal bidders
Sealed bids are now being accepted by Boyne City Main Street for contractual work for Downtown Sidewalk Snow Removal when 3 inches or more of snow has fallen. Sidewalk snow removal may need to be done more than once per day, depending on the weather. The entire width of the sidewalk will need to be cleared. The contract for snow removal will not be made with Main Street, but with individual businesses within the Downtown Development Authority District that want to sign on with the company, coordinated through our organization. All businesses in the DDA will be solicited to sign up. Please specify what type of equipment will be used, as well as if the bid is a discounted price from businesses signing up on their own. The bid should specify if additional price breaks will be given when a certain number of businesses sign on. Linear footage information of sidewalks is available by request. Boyne City Main Street will work with the company awarded the contract to get businesses signed on.

Bids will be publicly open and read on Monday, December 3 at 9 a.m. at City Hall. Bids shall be contained in a sealed envelope identified as Downtown Sidewalk Snow Removal. Boyne City Main Street reserves the right to reject any and all bids and to waive any irregularities as deemed to be in the best interest of Boyne City Main Street.

Boyne Mountain opening day one of the best; Skiing continues
What a great opening day! Mother Nature granted Boyne Mountain one of the best starts to the season that we've seen in years. Tons of snow from the sky, and even more from the Boyne Low-E fan guns. Our operations teams nailed it, and YOU made it all worth it. Every smile, high-five, handshake, and lap was fueled by a passion for not just a sport, but a lifestyle that we share. The stoke is alive and well, and the forecast looks great for more of what we all love.
They will also be open Thanksgiving Weekend, November 22-25. The slopes will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and lift tickets are $39 for adults and $29 for juniors, teens and seniors. Current conditions.

 "Earlier Bird" shoppers line up for souvenir cups and bargains
The 11th Annual Earlier Than The Bird downtown shopping event was another big hit with shoppers and store owners last Saturday. A big group of early bird shoppers lined up in front of the Boyne Chamber office (photo above) and other locations well before 7 a.m. The chamber office gave out 215 "I was there!" souvenir coffee mugs by 7:30 a.m. To qualify, you had to be wearing your pajamas.
The event was organized by the chamber and Boyne City Main Street. "We are happy to report it was another successful year of Earlier than the Bird!" said Main Street Executive Director Kelsie King-Duff. "We look forward to seeing everyone in their pajamas again next year for an always fun and quirky event."

Nov. 27 forum at BCHS on vaping and other risky behaviors
The public is invited to an open forum and presentation by area experts on Vaping and Other Risky Teen Behaviors from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Boyne City High School. In recent months, the trend of teen vaping has become a growing concern for school leaders around Northwest Michigan. Vaping contains many harmful chemicals, including nicotine. Vaping devices continue o change as well, making it challenging for parents, caregivers and school administrators to stay on top of current trends. In addition to the presentation by area experts, resources will be available to take home. Other issues to be discussed include opioid use, social media and emotional health and awareness.

Community Christmas gearing up to help families in need An open letter from the Boyne Area Community Christmas Committee: Tis the season, the giving season, the merry and bright season. For 63 years Boyne Area Community Christmas has helped make Christmas brighter for thousands of children and their families through the generous donations of our community. The committee is gearing up for it 64th year of spreading holiday cheer and lending a helping hand to those in need. If you find yourself able to give, your donation will be greatly appreciated by many and can be in the form of non-perishable foods, new unwrapped toys, games or books. If you'd like to donate monetarily, please make checks payable to the Boyne Area Community Christmas and send them to our Treasurer, Eleanor West at 915 Robinson Street, #15, Boyne City, MI 49712. Lighting of the Village is tonight
in Walloon Lake -including Christmas tree, Santa, music and refreshments
The Village of Walloon is excited to announce its 5th Annual Lighting of the Village taking place from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 21. Visit the Village for an evening of holiday cheer as the holiday lights are turned on for the first time this winter season. This year's lighting ceremony includes a large Christmas tree, donated by the Wally and Margy Kidd Family of Kidd & Leavy Real Estate, which will be in front of the Redwood Building (across from Barrel Back). The evening's events include fun activities for the entire family including the Petoskey Steel Drum Band, decorating sugar cookies and ornaments, hot cider, hot chocolate, coffee and homemade cookie. Santa and the elves also plan on making an appearance, for all the kids to share with Santa what they are hoping for this holiday season. A new addition this year includes a Holiday Market, around the Village of Walloon.

 The Boyne Area Chamber and the Boyne City Main Street Program are encouraging residents to shop local this holiday season and to participate in Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24. Chamber Executive Director Ashley Cousens notes that "The Boyne Area is home to several hundred small businesses and when we shop local we are contributing to the success of our economy. Whether it is service-related or retail, this weekend is one of the busiest shopping times of the year and we are encouraging consumers to shop locally first."

Manary resigns from United Way; Moving to NC Mental Health
Boyne City resident Lorraine Manary said it was tough for her to announce to the Char-Em United Way board of directors her resignation Nov. 6 after serving as the charitable fundraising organization's CEO the past 5 1/2 years. "It is with very mixed feelings that I announce my resignation from the position as CEO for Char-Em United Way," Manary said in her resignation letter. "During my 5 1/2 years with CEUW I've gotten to know you and the community well and will miss our work. Manary's last day with Char-Em United Way will be Dec. 7, and she'll soon thereafter begin her new position in a supporting role at North Country Community Mental Health with CEO Christine Gebhard. Lions donate to Dress For Chill project
Eta Nu member Charlotte Battjes accepted a very generous donation of $960 from Boyne Valley Lions Club President Jill Drury for the Eta Nu Charities Dressed for Chill project. Each year donations like these make it possible for Eta Nu to buy winter coats, pants, boots, hats and gloves for approximately 140 Boyne City Elementary, and Early Learner children. State finds no PFAS found in Boyne City water system
The City of Boyne City is pleased to report that the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has tested its water system and no PFAS have been detected. This information combined with the results from the Boyne City's annual water quality report are encouraging indicators of the safety and quality of the water provided to its customers. Test results are available on Boyne City's website www.cityofboynecity.com under Water Department. MEDC plans Nov. 29 development training in Boyne City
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation has scheduled Community Development training sessions throughout the state including one at Boyne City Hall from 9 a.m.. to 4 p.m. Thursday, November 29th.

Boyne Eta Nu Lights of Love project to benefit Hospice
The Boyne Eta Nu Charities annual "Lights of Love" tree lighting remembrance ceremony will take place Wednesday, December 5, at 6:30 p.m. on the Dilworth Hotel porch in Boyne City. This special event offers an opportunity for community members to honor and remember loved ones during the holiday season and raise money for the Hospice of Northwest Michigan to support patient care in our community. In the past 31 years, Boyne Eta Nu has raised over $104,000 for Hospice.
You can help decorate our Lights of Love tree by purchasing a green, blue, red or gold light ranging from $5 to $30. For a $40 contribution, you will receive a personalized "heart of love" with the name of your loved one that will hang on the tree during the month of December.
Light of Love flyers with donation information for lights, hearts or reserving for our post ceremony dinner are available online, at the Boyne Area Chamber and the Hospice of Northwest in Charlevoix. Those wishing to make direct contributions may do so via mail to Pati Scott, 4408 E. Fontenoy, Boyne City, MI 49712. Donations are tax-deductible. Judy Kuheana Breakfast benefits food pantries on Dec. 1
On Saturday, December 1st, Red Mesa Grill in Boyne City will host its 22nd Annual Judy Kuheana Benefit Breakfast. A Latin-American Breakfast Buffet will be offered 8am-10:30am. A silent auction table with great prizes generously donated by local merchants will be held that morning as well. All proceeds from both the breakfast and silent auction will benefit Boyne area food pantries through the Manna Food Project. Last year, the event attracted 114 guests, raising $2,491. This included $1,480 from the breakfast and donations and $1,011 from the silent auction. Judy was a founder of the 7th Day Adventist Food Pantry. She passed away in October of 1996. The Red Mesa Grill, with the help of Judy's brother, Jerry Kelts has held the Judy Kuheana Benefit Breakfast on the first Saturday of December since it opened in 1997, raising close to $30,000 to benefit Boyne Area food pantries. Magnum Hospitality also participates in the "Help Everyone Eat Program." The first Thursday of every month, Magnum Hospitality restaurants donate 5% of every dollar spent directly to the Boyne area pantries via the Manna Food Project, Father Fred Foundation in Traverse City, and the Elk Rapids Community Cupboard. Since inception, Magnum's "Help Everyone Eat" program has raised over $150,000 for these excellent charities.

Thanksgiving dinner is Wednesday at county senior centers
All Charlevoix County Senior Centers will have a special Thanksgiving celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 21. They will have a traditional Thanksgiving meal will all the trimmings from 11:45 to 12:30 p.m.
The Boyne Area Senior Center is hosting lunches on weekdays. Live music is included at 11:30 a.m. each Friday. The Silver Screen Movie Club is held on the second Tuesday of the month, and Fit and Balance exercise classes are held at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays and 10:30 a.m. on Fridays.

This is truly the most important volunteer position we have as for these clients it may be the only hot meal or personal interaction they have each day. Raven Hill open afternoons through Thanksgiving Weekend
Raven Hill Discovery Center will be open to the public from noon to 4 pm this Thanksgiving weekend - Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 23-25. Join us for indoor fun for all ages.
December events include the last free Second Saturday Science in 2018. The date is December 8th from noon to 4 pm. This is the 8th year for the popular FREE Second Saturday program. Not only does FREE mean no cost to families, but it also means "Families Reaching for Educational Excellence". Families are encouraged to come and have fun, explore and learn new things. The generosity of local northern Michigan community members has ensured that free Second Saturdays will continue through December of 2019. A Raven Hill volunteer puts it this way, "It's just plain fun to see families exploring and playing together AND learning."

School Boosters sponsor 40th Holiday Hobby Craft Show Dec. 1
The Holiday Hobby Craft Show will again present 150 arts and crafts vendors when it is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Boyne City High School. Admission is $2 for adults and no charge for students. Hourly drawings will be held for $20 Boyne Chamber Checks giveaways. North Central Michigan College's Luncheon Lecture will take a look at the Mackinac Bridge on Friday, November 30. The program will be held in the Library Conference Center on the Petoskey campus. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon. Kimberly Nowack, P.E., is the chief engineer for the Mackinac Bridge Authority. She will talk about the history of Straits Area transportation and the amazing story of the bridge's construction. She will also review the continuing challenges of maintaining this vitally important span and more.

First Presbyterian Church Advent services begin Dec. 2
First Presbyterian Church of Boyne City will host weekly Advent services beginning Sunday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. The theme for the month of December is "Calm and Bright", a play on the words to "Silent Night" as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of this beloved carol. Each week features special music and a worship order that calls us in out of the dark and into Christ's light. The traditional candlelight service is open to the community, with caroling beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the service starting at 7 p.m. The service features special music, with opportunities for the congregation to participate. This service ends with communion and the lighting of the candles as we sing "Silent Night" and welcome the Christ Child.
CHRISTMAS DINNER - On Christmas Day, community members gather in the fellowship hall for a traditional Christmas Day dinner, complete with ham, turkey and all the fixings. The dinner is provided from Noon to 2 p.m. at no charge and delivery is available by calling the church at 231-582-7983. Please arrange for your delivery prior to Dec. 19th. Carry-outs are available with no reservation needed.

Create: Community Arts Studio (CCAS) believes studio space is critical for artists and understands the importance of having dedicated space to work in. The Artist in Residence (AIR) program at Create is an intensive day program offered to emerging high school artists that forms a positive network of artists to expand one's existing practice, work collaboratively, discuss art critically and inspire one another.
Each year, CCAS attracts 10 aspiring artists into the AIR program, offering an unparalleled studio experience. The program is a four-month residency in the Fall and Spring semesters with five new artists chosen each residency. Students who are enrolled in high school by the fall of 2018 and reside in Charlevoix or Emmet County are eligible to apply.

Stiggs hosts Dec. 4th benefit dinner for Conservation District
In the name of conservation - and in our case, shoreline preservation, soil and water quality, environmental stewardship and backyard conservation - Stiggs Brewery and Boyne True Value Co-Op have teamed up with us to host a special Conservation Benefit Dinner to benefit the Charlevoix County Conservation District at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4. Tickets for the four-course meal are $50; call Stiggs at 231-497-6100 for reservations. Flier with dinner details. The funds raised will go toward our new Community Resource Room project. With help from the Charlevoix Community Foundation, Trans Canada, Toby Prevo and his amazing team of contractors, the room is near completion, but $12,500 is still needed to be raised. The new Community Room will also be a place for all of our conservation groups and community partners and supporters to enjoy for generations to come. Arts Collective plans Pint and Paint event at Stiggs Brewery

Fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers or big brothers are invited to bring their sons (ages 7-14) for a fun-filled Father/Son weekend, February 8-10, at Camp Daggett. Holiday shopping at CTAC's Merry Makers Marketplace
 Crooked Tree Arts Center presents the fourth annual Merry Makers Marketplace, Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in both the CTAC galleries and the Carnegie Building.
For two days, Crooked Tree Arts Center transforms into an art fair with over 40 juried artists and vendors selling beautifully crafted gifts and goods. Patrons can shop one-of-a-kind items, including pottery, handmade purses and accessories, jewelry, paper goods, home décor, photography, soaps and salves, artisanal food items, and seasonal produce.
During both days, guests can enjoy a cash bar, featuring wine, beer, and mimosas, as well as a complimentary festive spread of cookies and punch. Local musicians Charlie Millard and Indigo Moon will perform on Friday and Saturday, respectively, to help set the holiday mood.
CTAC's Holiday Shop & Drop also takes place on Saturday, November 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kids, ages 4 to 11, will make two special holiday-themed projects and enjoy age appropriate games with CTAC art instructor Jennifer Nowak, while adults shop Merry Makers Marketplace and the downtown Petoskey area on Small Business Saturday.

OVERCOMING CHILDHOOD PAIN will be discussed at Lifetree Café on Potluck Sunday, Nov. 25 at 5:30, program beginning at 6:30. Bring a dish to share. The program features a filmed interview with Delisa Mayer, a woman whose family took part in an ill-fated university study during her childhood. The outcome of that study-which introduced a newborn chimpanzee into the family and asked them to raise it as a human child-shaped Mayer's childhood and led to her parents' divorce. "Our family was very torn up by this," says Mayer. "It was a hard thing to live through, and it's one of the reasons I don't often tell this story." During the program participants will discover key steps to help recover from the scars of past experiences.

LYME DISEASE VICTIM FUND-RAISER - The Landing restaurant is encouraging people to attend a fund-raiser for one of their employees, Doni Vaughn, who has been diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Also a teacher at East Jordan Elementary School, Doni has been unable to walk due to paralysis that has progressed into her limbs. The fund-raiser dinner and auction will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 at East Jordan High School. There will be a pasta bar with a suggested donation of $7 for adults, $5 for children, $30 per family. There will also be a bake sale, 50/50 raffle, silent auction, pop can drive and more.
