Boyne Thunder roars into Boyne City July 12th and 13th
The 16th annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run brings beautiful boats and excitement for all ages to Boyne City and parts of Northern Michigan Friday and Saturday, July 12th and 13th. The poker run showcases 120 high performance boats from across the country, roaring through the waters of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan on a 130-mile excursion, in search of the best poker hand.
The Poker Run, where proceeds benefit Camp Quality, Challenge Mountain and Boyne City Main Street, begins with a series of parade laps starting at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 13th, leaving from the Boyne City Marina. Veterans Park, Peninsula Park and Tannery Beach offer some of the best views for spectators. Boats in the poker run will speed off to Elk Rapids, Northport, Harbor Springs, and Bay Harbor, with a lunch stop in downtown Charlevoix, and a final card stop near Horton Bay. The day concludes with a dinner and an auction at Veterans Park where participants "play" their cards to see who has the best hand.
>
EASY DOES IT - With near record high water levels in Lake Charlevoix, the parade laps will be run at slower speeds this year. "We want to be good stewards of the environment," event chairman Bob Alger said.
> SPECIAL STROLL THE STREETS - In addition to the Poker Run, the weekend offers other activities in Boyne City, including a Friday night dinner for the boaters in Veterans Park and an expanded Stroll the Streets downtown running an extra half hour from 6 to 9:30 p.m. with music and entertainment and an incredible displays of boats and classic cars.
> SUPPORTING NONPROFITS - Boyne Thunder is brought to you by Boyne City Main Street and supports Camp Quality, Challenge Mountain, and Boyne City Main Street programming.
> DOUBLE PLATINUM SPONSOR - A special thanks to this year's Double Platinum sponsor,
Wise Men Distillery

Boyne Heritage Center gets inaugural $15,000 donation
In a special ceremony, Liesel Litzenburger Meijer presented to the new nonprofit, Boyne Heritage Center, its first major donation of $15,000 plus another $10,000 if it is matched by additional donations. Her gift will go toward the construction of the historical interpretive center to be housed in the Boyne City City Hall.
Meijer commented, "I think you are doing a GREAT thing for Boyne... it will be fun to be an early part of this super project."
Responding to the wishes of the community, the Boyne Heritage Center has set its goal to become a world-class collaborative historical hub, preserving and promoting the stories of Boyne City, Boyne Falls, Walloon Lake, Advance, Ironton, Horton Bay, and surrounding townships.

A board of directors has been formed, bylaws written and strategic planning done. The board plans to hire an executive director and support staff to manage, promote and develop the center for continued growth and expansion.
In addition to the interpretive exhibit, the Boyne Heritage Center will offer programs, services, events and online resources to preserve and promote the history of our area.

The Yip's Children's Choir from Hong Kong.
|
Boyne City will host one of the major concerts of the 23rd Children of the World in Harmony youth choir and dance festival. The concert will be held in conjunction with a Sister City partnership ceremony at the High School Performing Arts Center starting at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, July 18. The concert will feature:
- Nearly 200 young singers, dancers, directors and accompanists with the Crystal Children's Choir from the San Francisco area.
- Espuelas de Plata, a Mariachi band from Texas.
- Gluais, a traditional Irish choir from Trim, Ireland.
- The Yip's Children's Choir from Hong Kong.
- The Wattana Girls Chorus from Thailand.
- Our own Little Traverse Youth & Treble Choirs and Dancers Without Borders from Northern Michigan.
The concert will begin with the official twinning (Sister City announcement) between Boyne City and the Boyne River Valley Ireland. Last year, VWB's Little Traverse Youth Choir with singers from throughout Northern Michigan traveled to Ireland and Scotland to perform in several venues. While in Ireland's Boyne River Valley, the choir represented Boyne City in a special presentation in which they presented a certificate of greeting and other items from Boyne City to the residents of Ireland's Boyne River Valley.
As a result of that presentation, representatives of the Boyne River Valley of Ireland have traveled to Michigan to meet with officials of Boyne City will formally establish a Sister City (or "twinning" as they call it in Ireland) relationship. This ceremony will begin at 6:45pm at the Performing Arts Center. The Concert will follow at 7:15pm. The concert has been generously supported by the Boyne City Kiwanis Club.
Please help us fill gift bags for visiting children's choirs

We would appreciate any little freebies, stickers, pamphlets, candies (nothing that can melt, please!) of any amount. We're hoping to present these guests with a taste of what our area offers in hopes that they return for another visit.

Restaurant receives liquor license just in time for 4th of July
Water Street Cafe's new owners have received their liquor license, just in time for the 4th of July weekend. The downtown Boyne City cafe will now be serving beer, wine, cocktails and mixed drinks. The restaurant has been a big hit with an expanded menu and expanded hours since new owners took over May 1st.
The new proprietors are all members of the same local family. Jim and Kirt Ploe are the chef and front of house manager, spouses Jennie and Stacy are the servers, and their kids are helping out too. Kirt and Jim have extensive restaurant experience, but they've never owned their own place until now. "As soon as I walked in here, I knew this was the place we wanted," Kirt Ploe said of the cafe located at 113 Water Street. They're getting involved in the community already, signing on as the Pirate Farewell Party sponsor in this summer's PirateFest.
The cafe is open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. plus Friday and Saturdays until 9 p.m. Their menu includes many popular holdovers from previous owners Larry and Val Glasgow plus some new items including a Sunday breakfast buffet. Facebook Page. Phone (231) 497-5050.

Bike Share program continues at Sunset Park Log Cabin
The Boyne Bike Share program launched last year returns this spring and summer. Four bikes are parked on the north side of the Sunset Park Log Cabin at 28 S. Lake Street, and the concept is simple: "Borrow a bike and bring it back for others to enjoy." There is no checkout system, just the honor system, organizers say. They only ask that the bikes be returned each day and not kept overnight. The bikes were donated by community members and service clubs, and they were refurbished by Mike Cortright of North Country Cycle Sport. Helmets are also available with the bikes.
Partners making this new program possible are: Boyne City Kiwanis, Boyne Valley Lions, Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce, Boyne City Main Street, City of Boyne City, and North Country Cycle Sport.

SENIOR CITIZEN FRAUD - The Charlevoix County Commission on Aging has issued a press release warning that genetic testing company representatives are offering "free" genetic tests to Medicare beneficiaries. These tests can also be referred to as DNA screenings, cancer screenings, and hereditary testing, to name a few. The representatives go to senior centers, senior housing, health fairs, and even parking lots to convince people to let them take a cheek swab for testing. They advertise on TV and online. They promise that the results will help recipients avoid diseases or find the right medications. All they ask for in return is the person's Medicare number. While this may sound harmless, in reality it is dangerous. "These companies can steal people's medical identity and falsely bill Medicare, draining the system of needed funds. The Office of Inspector General (OIG) released a fraud alert on the topic. It advises the public to be suspicious of anyone who offers free genetic testing and then requests their Medicare number. Full press release.
