Today, the National Weather Service has issued a warning that the Braddock District is under an enhanced risk of severe weather. Thunderstorms are expected to begin around 4:00 p.m. and to continue through Tuesday evening. The primary hazards tonight include high winds and flash flooding, though residents should also be prepared for the possibility of hail or tornados.

As our community recovers from the microburst from last month, it is essential that residents be prepared to handle the before, during and after that comes along with severe weather. Please continue reading for tips to stay safe, as well as the resources for storm recovery compiled after our meeting on July 8.



Get Prepared

PREPARING FOR THUNDERSTORMS:

• When thunder roars, go indoors!
• Avoid using running water.
• Report fallen trees or downed power lines in the road to 911 immediately.
• In instances of flash flooding, do not walk, swim or drive through the water. Just six inches of water is enough to present danger.

PREPARING FOR POWER OUTAGES:

• Take note of the items you use that rely on electricity. Plan for batteries or other alternative forms of energy.
• Call a doctor and ask about power outage plans if you rely on medical devices powered by electricity or refrigerated medication.
• Refrigerators can keep contents cold for four hours without electricity, and freezers keep contents cold for 48 hours.
• Use generators outdoors and at least 20 feet away from windows.

PREPARING FOR HIGH WINDS:

• Make sure that any loose items outside (chairs, tables, garden equipment) are secured or put away.
• Make sure windows and doors are closed and secure.

For all these, it is recommended to have a friend or a neighbor to check in with after the storm.
