Greetings!
Wow, over 1,000 visits have been made to featured destinations in and around Centre County during Centred Outdoors events since our first outing of the season in May. Thank you for joining us on guided and self-guided adventures, and for following thsi Adventure Guide for ideas on where to explore on your own! It's been a great year, and we have even more outdoor fun and adventure waiting for you over the next few months. After all, fall offers some of the greatest views of our region from vistas typically hidden by leaves, and the cool weather makes for crisp, comfortable walks through our forests and local parks.
This week we'll be exploring the Jean Aron Path, located just outside of Boalsburg in Rothrock State Forest. The path is named for the local author and poet, Jean Aron. Aron wrote The Short Hiker, a title chosen not only because the book highlights adventures that are short in distance, but also because Aron herself measures 4 feet 9 inches tall. Throughout her book and in articles, Aron has encouraged hikers to be less concerned with distance covered and more willing to slow down (and even stop) and enjoy the the natural beauty of the world around them. In fact, in one passage of The Short Hiker, Aron writes about one trail, "Take your time going up. It is worth the trip. We once encountered a box turtle coming up the trail even more slowly than we."
We hope you can join us at the Jean Aron Path this Sunday at 1 or 3 p.m. for our last two guided hikes of the season (complete details below). We'll take a relaxing nature walk, slowing down as Jean Aron suggest to admire the hemlock and mountain laurel and to see what natural surprises we might find on the ground, in the trees, and overhead.
Let's stress less, and explore more this Sunday!
Sincerely,
Dan Trew,
Adventure Coordinator, ClearWater Conservancy
