As costs rise and community needs grow, more Huntingdon County households are struggling to keep food on the table, heat in their homes, and basic personal care items within reach.
In response, Huntingdon County United Way has expanded their United We Care Closet initiative and launched the United We Care Food & Fuel Drive, running November 1-30, 2025.
Through this effort, they're:
- Collecting nonperishable food and essential household items for their partner agencies to distribute directly to families in need.
- Accepting monetary donations for the United We Care Fuel Fund, which helps local families stay warm through the winter. Funds are distributed through their trusted partners, The Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul.
If your business is interested in participating, HCUW would be happy to connect with you.

Government Shutdown Leaves the Economy in Uncharted Territory
Emily Peck, Axios
October 26, 2025
Data went dark this month. The government shutdown is halting the collection and release of statistics tracking the job market, public health and crop production, as well as other economic indicators. Why it matters: The numbers are critical for understanding what's happening in the U.S., particularly at a moment of rapid change in both government policies and in the job market. Businesses use gold-standard government data, like the jobs report, to set wages and make hiring, pricing and investment decisions. Investors watch the numbers so closely that they can drive big stock reactions. Policymakers use the data to set minimum wage standards and increase food assistance or other important benefits. Since the shutdown began on Oct. 1, government agencies have stopped collecting or releasing information about the labor market. The GDP report, measuring the growth of the entire economy, won't come out next week if the government is still shuttered, and may wind up delayed even if it reopens.

Did you know........
Small businesses represent the largest segment by number of most local chamber membership rolls. Results in the research study by The Shapiro Group, Inc. and Market Street indicate the impact of local chamber membership on small businesses is very powerful. If a consumer knows a small business is a member of its local chamber, the business enjoys a 44 percent increase in its consumer favorability rating, a 51 percent increase in consumer awareness, a 57 percent increase in its local reputation and a 63 percent increase in the likelihood that consumers will patronize the business in the future.
Research indicates that chamber membership stimulates business-to-business commerce in the local community. Other businesses in town are more likely to do business with you and your company if you are a member of the local chamber. Because a major part of a small business typically comes from business-to-business services, it is essential to maintain a positive standing within the local business community.
