Good Afternoon
On behalf of everyone at Braniff Airways Foundation and Braniff International, welcome to this special Learn About Braniff Event. Today, we will reveal our Braniff International Boeing 747 Concept Cabin. This unique project began in 2020 during COVID as a way to share with Braniff’s audience the exciting airliner interiors from the golden era of flight, since we could not meet in person.
Braniff Airways Chairman and Braniff Airways Foundation President Ben Cass, began working on this project when it became apparent that older Boeing 747s that had just recently been retired to the airplane graveyards in Arizona, and California, were easily obtainable. Keeping this in mind he began drawing up the plans to create an actual First Class cabin from Braniff’s first and iconic Boeing 747-127 registered as N601BN and dubbed 747 Braniff Place and lovingly called The Great Pumpkin and Fat Albert by Braniff Family employees.
A supplier of Boeing 747 cabin parts was found in Arizona, where Delta Airlines Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jets had just recently been retired to this aircraft wrecking yard. The original plan called for a simple four rows of seats with sidewall panels and overhead luggage bins. However, the reasonable cost of the parts enabled us to continue with adding the full L1 Entry Door and then the L1 Lavatory.
Before the project began, it was decided that the concept cabin would meet all STEM requirements. Therefore, every effort was made to ensure that, if possible, all parts of the cabin would operate as they originally did on the actual aircraft. For instance, the L1 Entry door could have been made fully operable by using a simple bar to attach the door to the cabin frame, However, it was decided to use an actual L1 Door hinge, complete with the hydraulic wind-catch mechanism to prevent the wind from grabbing the door and slamming it into the side of the aircraft when it was opened in high wind conditions. There are many other STEM examples that you will see as we begin revealing the cabin to you in just a few moments.
First, let me introduce everyone to you. Mr. Ben Cass, the designer of our concept cabin. Mr. Collin Ice, Braniff’s current COO and our host for today. The players for the skit include Ms. Kathryn Lance, Ms. Kathy Logan Smith, Ms. Terri Hatch and Ms. Penny Puetz, and Mr. Floyd Corsey, all former Braniff flight attendants will ensure your make believe flight to Hawaii, is wonderful and exciting. In addition, Mr. Tim Gleason, Ms. Marcella Gleason, Mr. Rudy Bowling and Ms. Marilyn Bowling, all former Braniff employees are our passengers flying to Hawaii, today, along with Ms. Donna Miller, Braniff Airways Foundation’s Grant and Fundraising Manager and airline industry expert and Braniff Airways Foundation volunteer Mr. Henry Harteveldt.
Today, we have a very special announcement before we begin our flight to Honolulu, Braniff Airways Foundation and Dallas Independent School District have reached a unique agreement. The Braniff 747 Concept Cabin will be placed with the DISD Career Institute North just up the street at Killion Drive and Midway Road. Here the cabin will be available to more than five departments of students at the school. This facility features flight attendant and hospitality training.
Braniff Airways Foundation was also able to procure the necessary parts to build the entire First Class cabin, which includes the large and fully operational A Galley. This second unconstructed part of the cabin will be sent to DISD Career Institute South, which will enable those students to not only construct the rest of the cabin but learn about aircraft parts and manufacturing as well as airline inflight operations.
With this unique partnership, Braniff will have full access to the cabin for various events and promotions, while at the same time opening up full access to the cabin to the students of DISD. Braniff Is extremely pleased with this partnership that will only serve to continue Braniff’s legacy with a new generation of fans.
This project was made possible by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Humanities of Texas. A generous grant was also made by the Eugene McDermott Foundation and from Braniff Airways, Incorporated. In addition, a very special thanks to the many individual donors without whose generosity this project could not have been completed. Thank you to each organization for your continued support of Braniff Airways Foundation.
A very special thank you to each of you for making this a very fun and exciting day in the continuing history of Braniff International. And now, our flight to Honolulu, is ready for departure.
