UW Math Day
About 50 Braves in upper-level math courses attended UW Math Day for High School Students. This annual program included cutting-edge topics in the mathematical sciences presented by top faculty. Additionally, the students participated in activities, discussions and campus lab visits. BBHS participates in this event every year and it is a great way to expose our students to college math.

Robotics Competition
The BraveBots robotics team (Team 4682) competed March 12th and 13th at Glacier Peak High School against 37 other teams. The Bravebots finished with five wins, six losses and one tie. The team had a slow start and gained momentum as the weekend progressed.

The team then competed at Mount Vernon on March 19th and 20th against 34 other teams. They finished with nine wins and three losses. The BraveBots, under the driving team of Lorenzo Tamez (9), Cormac Brown (10) and Annie Mae Foley (10) and with the support of the rest of the team - Robbie Barrett (12), Will Marchand (10), Daniel Deubler (10), Andrew Gilbrough (11), Sam Kallick (10), Alec Misenti (10), Brendan Nenninger (10), Phil Steinke (10), Steven Cho (11), Elise Valdez (11) and Johana Warrick (11), finished the qualifying matches in 3rd place which qualified them as the 3rd alliance team. Japanese Week
The Japanese Club, under the leadership of Ms. Watanabe, put on a wonderful Japanese week introducing the student body to  Japanese culture through decorations, Kanji letters, food and games.

Latin Week
The Latin Club, led by classics teacher Ms. McFarland, hosted the 2nd Annual Latin Week. The activities of the week introduced students to the Latin language through morning reflections, trivia, and Latin-inspired words posted around school. It was a great opportunity to educate the student body on the many ways Latin has influenced American society.  Latin forms the basis of many world languages.  The use of Latin words permeates many fields including sciencemedicine and law. It, of course, is still alive and well within the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church.

Talent Show
Once again, BBHS students displayed their incredible talents at the annual talent show.

The Miter Student Newspaper
The student newspaper, The Miter, produces on-line news covering the latest events at Bishop Blanchet.  With features on spring sports, the talent show, the robotics team, and Latin Week, your on-line student newspaper is ready for you: http://themiter.org.

Dance Team
The dance team has had a busy and successful year. They competed at three regional competitions. They qualified for districts and placed third at the competition. This qualified them for the WIAA State Tournament this past weekend in Yakima, competing in the 1A/2A/3A Division. The team finished 7th overall in 3A schools in the state! Their hard work and dedication definitely paid off and they truly represented the Bishop Blanchet community.

Their next event is the Dance Team Showcase scheduled  for Friday May 13, 2016 in the Ernie Rose Gymnasium from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The members of the team are  Brandon Ly (11), Clarissa Ramirez (12), Kyri McCoy (12) and Zoey Gao (12) and they are coached by Albee Abigania.

Students of Color Conference
Bishop Blanchet took 19 students, one administrator and one dance team advisor to the Students of Color Conference held in Everett. This is the first time that Bishop Blanchet has been invited. They were the only school from King County and the only Catholic School represented.  Students of the newly formed  BBHS Black Student Union (2015-16), BBHS Diversity Club and BBHS Dance Team participated with more than 2,000  students of color from all over Snohomish County. The Bishop Blanchet Dance Team, along with the Contagious Dance Company (both coached by Albee Abigania) performed as the entertainment for the event

The keynote speaker Dr. Erin Jones, Superintendent of Tacoma Schools, spoke to the importance of never settling for the status quo, but to strive to be more than that, to attend college, make something of yourself and make a difference in the world.  Students were also able to attend workshops including entrepreneurship, leadership, how to navigate the college application process and many more.

Bishop Blanchet HS hopes to be invited again next year and to double the number of students of color from BBHS that attend this conference. Students in attendance were:  Quamarion Asmond- Johnson (11), Makda Negash (12), Pomy Ayele (12), Mesale Solomon (11), Da'Shay Alexander (12), Shannen Antolin (12), Jeremiah Stone (11), Zebiba Denning (10), Eliza Penalosa (11), Paloma Vasquez (10), Henri Coronado-Volta (9), Mahilet Mesfin (11), Jayla Wilson (9), Adrianna Romero (12), Brandon Ly (11), Clarissa Ramirez (12), Zoey Gao (12), Kyri McCoy (12) and Angelica Dampier (11).

Eagle Scouts
Congratulations to Kyle Joyce (11) and Cole Lunde (11) who both recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout  is the highest  achievement  or rank attainable in the  Boy Scouting  program of the  Boy Scouts of America  (BSA). Only about 5% of Scouts ever achieve the Eagle rank. Great job, Kyle and Cole!

Hunger Retreat & Poverty  Simulation
This Hunger Retreat is open to all students and responds to the Lenten call of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Held during Lent, the retreat consists of a 24 hour fast, community service, and education and advocacy for the poor and hungry. The retreat is student-led, and is sponsored by the school's St. Vincent de Paul Society.

During the retreat, BBHS hosted a Poverty Simulation put on by Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry. Students, parents, and some younger siblings participated in the simulation to understand what it might be like to live in a low-income family trying to survive month to month. After the simulation, the group came together to discuss challenges of living in poverty and ways our community can help.

DeMeiro Jazz Festival
Congratulations to the Vocal Jazz Choir under the direction of Angus McDonell. Vocal Jazz Ensembles from Western Washington and beyond participated   in this  year's Jazz Fest. Our Blanchet Braves performed Tenderly, One Note Samba, When Sunny Gets Blue, and It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing, Swing, Swing. Clinician Dave Barduhen of Portland University provided valuable feedback for the ensemble and specifically noted the choir's "great choral sound." The day also included workshops, the opportunity to listen to other high school performances and a chance to work with clinicians including  Greta Matassa and Dee Daniels. But wait there is more!  Kirk Marcy, Edmond's Community College Vocal Jazz Director and one of the Festival's contributing directors, will be coming to Blanchet on Tuesday, April 5th, for an in-class workshop as the group prepares their repertoire for the Reno Jazz Festival.

40th Annual Brave Venture Auction
Ernie Rose Gymnasium transformed into the Marrakech by Moonlight
The 40th Annual Brave Venture Auction was held in the Ernie Rose Activities Center on Saturday, March 12, 2016. More than 300 parents, alums and friends of Bishop Blanchet enjoyed silent and live auction bidding, great raffles, dinner, cocktails and dancing in a Moroccan styled stunning ballroom for our Marrakech by Moonlight themed auction! Everyone remarked at the beautiful décor that parent volunteers spent hours creating and told us it was our best auction so far!

The auction is our largest fundraiser next to the Annual Fund and all fund support programs in the Arts, Academics, Athletics, Activities, Campus Ministry retreats as well as our annual operating budget and financial aid to students in need. The Fund a Need video featured teachers and students speaking on the need for a new activities bus. We are still accepting donations. If you have not had a chance to give to it, you can do so HERE !

4th Annual Easter Egg Hunt
BBHS hosted its fourth annual Easter Egg Hunt. Despite a little rain, the event was a great success. Many BBHS alumni and families joined together for this fun-filled morning featuring kids' crafts, prizes, Easter treats and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

Campaign Milestones
BBHS is currently in the Advance ment Phase of the campaign and is actively seeking leadership level gifts of $100,000 or more. The school recently received confirmation of a significant commitment from The Norcliffe Foundation that will boost the current total raised to just over $5.3 million! Together with The Norcliffe Foundation and other very generous lead donors, the school has tremendous momentum, already breaking all records for fundraising here at Bishop Blanchet.

In addition to this inspiring news, BBHS also received an anonymous commitment for an additional $1 million to be used as a dollar-for-dollar challenge gift in the next phase of the campaign. The Campaign Steering Committee, co-chaired by Mary Hermann Welch '65 (P '96) and Beau Gould (P '15 and '17), is currently determining how best to use this challenge opportunity to leverage additional support. The school is confident it will meet that challenge and boost the campaign total to more than $7 million on the way toward funding even more of this vision for the students, faculty and community of Bishop Blanchet!

With all of this great momentum, the school is on track of reaching the campaign goal of $12 million, with the anticipation of significant construction beginning by mid-2017. For a more detailed explanation of the campaign and how the projects will benefit the Bishop Blanchet community, click  HERE
