International Thespian Society
Congratulations to the 16 students who have been inducted into the International Thespian Society this year. To be inducted one must first letter in drama by fulfilling two aspects: an onstage credit for acting and a backstage credit which may include stage management and/or any technical crews such as set design, costume, hair and makeup or publicity/marketing crew. You must then earn the proper number of thespian points. Many thespians have logged hundreds and hundreds of hours in the pursuit of theatre arts and being called a thespian is a great honor for theatre students around the world.

Christian Ramos (12) wins Washington State Stock Market Game
Congratulations to Christian Ramos (12) who was the winner of the regional Washington State Stock Market Game. Christian placed number one in a field of nearly 300 high school teams. He turned his SMG starting $100,000 into $131,565.83 by game's end.
|
Christian Ramos (12) and Sara Nguyen (12)
|
Although Christian invested in the well-known Starbucks, Microsoft, and Apple, it was a nation-wide chiropractic clinic that proved the big money maker. When asked why he chose a chiropractic stock, Christian explained: "I was just researching companies and saw they had a high increase over the last year."
As part of the stocks unit in the Personal Finance class, the students are introduced to the Stock Market Game which ran from March 9 - May 15. Although some class time is given, the SMG is not a graded component so most participation is outside of class to the degree of personal motivation and enthusiasm.
The class enrolled in the game as two-person teams and teacher, Ms. Clarice Hunter, wants to make sure that Christian's modest partner, Sara Nguyen (12), gets some deserved recognition too. Due to a lengthy illness, Sara prioritized her time to catch up on missed assignments, so spent little time on the SMG. Sara was involved, however, with initial research and strategy when the game was first introduced.
Also finishing high in the rankings were Olivia Brown (12) and Deanna Ly (12) who finished 23rd as well as the team of Anthony Menghi (12) and Austin Schmidt (12) who placed 35th.

Mass with 2nd Grade Students
Bishop Blanchet partnered with ten Catholic elementary schools to bring more than 300 second-grade students to BBHS for a special Mass. Hunger Retreat
The Hunger Retreat is an annual retreat sponsored by our St. Vincent de Paul board. BBHS students (frosh-seniors) collected pledges supporting their 24 hour fast. Funds raised will benefit our shelter meal programs at Teen Feed, St. Martin de Porres, and Sacred Heart Shelters. As part of the retreat the students made crosses representing the 19,000 children who die each day throughout the world due to hunger and its related effects.
BBHS Supports Dorothy Day House
The Dorothy Day House was one of the organizations supported by our freshmen volunteers during the Freshmen Day of Service. Dorothy Day House is a residence for homeless women managed by Catholic Housing Services. The Belltown facility provides 41 single units for low-income adult women, many of whom are disabled. Many come to Dorothy Day House with nothing.
Not wanting the support to last only a single day, teacher Kerry Burrows and student Noah Traynor (11) and Neah Gardiner (11) collected donations of everyday necessities such as soap and toiletries to support the women of Dorothy Day House. As a thank you, the manager brought the school a framed picture of the building that includes signatures from the residents.
The school is once again collecting donations through June 9. Donations from this wish list are greatly appreciated.

Thanks to the students and other participants, Bloodworks NW (formerly Puget Sound Blood Center) was able to register 38 donors and 31 of them were first-time donors. Of those, 30 units of volunteered blood were collected. Since each donation can save up to three lives, this means that 90 units of different blood products will be available to save the lives of local patients!

Lacrosse
The BBHS Braves Lacrosse team battled through a year of injuries with as many as nine varsity players on injured reserve at one time. A veteran and very athletic group of defensemen, led by senior and co-captain Drew Higgins, anchored our back end protecting rookie goalie Jaybry Doyle-Hupf (10). Our offense was spearheaded by attackman Phil Ward (11). Senior co-captain Jeremy Facer, often worked double duty as a midfielder and attackman during the season. Sophomores "Team" Curran and Kernan Guethe, and the rest of the junior varsity squad, stepped up whenever they were called upon. The team refused to give up and ran off three straight victories before losing in overtime to Bellarmine Prep to end their 2015 campaign.

Bishop Blanchet Awarded two Fulcrum Foundation Grants Principal Sheila Kries and Bishop Blanchet were awarded $9,800 for the Fulcrum Foundations's Building Diversity and Inclusion Program. The program is designed to assist schools in welcoming students, regardless of race, ethnicity, or class by increasing accessibility, promoting academic excellence and increasing cultural competency of teachers and staff. Grants through this program encourage schools to respect, celebrate and include the culture of each student as an integral part of a Catholic education and as a manifestation of Catholic identity. Our Learning Resource Specialist, Tina Hogan, was awarded a Fulcrum Foundation Star Grant that will fund the purchase of a cognitive test and an English language proficiency test for students with learning challenges. Puget Sound Council of Teachers of Mathematics Bishop Blanchet partnered with Puget Sound Council of Teachers of Mathematics (PSCTM) this school year in supporting the promotion of math education in the Seattle area. PSCTM was founded to encourage continual professional growth among local mathematics teachers. The organization sponsored three major activities during the year: a fall, a winter, and a spring dinner. This year these three dinners were hosted at Bishop Blanchet. A variety of programs were presented at these events, ranging from learning new math games for classroom use, to the role teachers are playing in the new common core assessments. Bishop Blanchet is proud to offer this professional development and collaboration opportunity to our own instructors as well as our teaching colleagues in the area. Back to Top |
