Nandie Oosthuizen Commencement Speaker
|
We are pleased to announce this year's graduation speaker will be alumna
Nandie Oosthuizen, BBHS Class of 2007.
Born and raised in South Africa, Nandie is a young social entrepreneur dedicated toward creating lasting positive social change in our world. She is the founder and CEO of Hand & Heart, a non-profit organization dedicated to the mobilization of resources and support for individuals and communities that are unable to fully prosper due to illness, disability, inequity, injustice and the violation of their human rights. Her passion for social change began as a student at Bishop Blanchet High School when she started her first venture which successfully raised money and awareness for the crisis in Darfur. For her efforts, Nandie received the Washington Youth Philanthropist of the Year award in 2007. In 2008, Nandie was recruited to work alongside His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and in 2009 was named USA Young Immigrant of the Year for the incredible contributions she has made to the world at such a young age. She graduated with distinction from the University of Washington with degrees in Business Administration and Sociology. She was awarded the Howard B. Puget Sound Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Bishop Blanchet High School partners with Puget Sound Council of Teachers of Mathematics (PSCTM) by hosting quarterly dinners. The dinners feature speakers talking about diverse topics in mathematics and education. At the spring dinner we had the distinct honor of hosting two speakers, Dr. Casey Mann and Dr. Jennifer McLoud-Mann, who have wowed the math world with their discovery of a new kind of pentagon capable of tiling a plane (fitting together on a flat surface without overlapping or leaving gaps.) This is the 15
th such pentagon ever discovered and the first new one to be uncovered in 30 years. This finding could lead to advances in chemistry and structural design in the study of crystals and the emerging field of self-assembly.
Doctors Mann and McLoud-Mann are associate professors of mathematics at the University of Washington in Bothell. We are fortunate to have such distinguished speakers share their insights on this interesting facet of mathematics. Bishop Blanchet is proud to offer this professional development and collaboration opportunity to our own instructors as well as our teaching colleagues in the area.
