Colleague, Friend, Mentor, and Advocate:
A Portrait of Marlies Zammuto
|
|
As close friends and colleagues will attest, Touchpoints was a way of being for Marlies Zammuto. In every relationship, Marlies identified the strengths in people, and supported them wherever they were in their individual developmental process. Always listening to understand, Marlies facilitated conversations and dialogue in every aspect of her life that challenged established mindsets, and incorporated and harnessed multiple perspectives.
Marlies’ first encounter with the Touchpoints Approach was at a child care agency serving communities in Lawrence, Massachusetts, when in 1998 she attended a Community Level Training, a core course in the Touchpoints professional development sequence. The relational aspects of Touchpoints, and the practical skills learned in the training, immediately spoke to Marlies, both as a professional, and as a person. As a certified Life Coach and Shamanic Practitioner, the Touchpoints emphasis on building trusting relationships as a way of delivering better outcomes for children and families strongly aligned with her own personal ethos that
“it really isn’t about us; it is us in relationship to others."

Resources and Information Making An Impact: The National Center for Parent, Family and Community Engagement (NCPFCE)
|
|
With the goal of promoting positive, enduring change for children, families and their communities,
the NCPFCE, led by BTC, has developed and released
the research-based Parent, Family and Community Engagement Framework for Early Childhood Systems
. The Framework describes the components of early childhood systems as they relate to parent, family, and community engagement, and specifies elements that can be coordinated to most effectively impact child and family outcomes. The Framework helps leaders, administrators, providers, and other decision-makers understand the collaborative relationship between parents and the early childhood systems, programs, providers, and community-based organizations that support them.
The Framework can be downloaded for free in English and Spanish. Additional resources are available to facilitate the Framework’s implementation, including assessment workbooks and sample scenarios.

BTC's Parenting Program
enables providers to facilitate parent groups and help them learn about their children’s development, while addressing issues facing their families. In the training, participants learn strategies for engaging parents, approaches to supporting parental mastery, and group facilitation techniques.
BTC's Parenting Program
can be delivered onsite at any organization, as was the recent case with Boston-based Smart from the Start, which provided the training to its family-facing providers who work closely with parents.
