Global Gateways Initiative grant winners announced

The Office of International Affairs is pleased to announce the grantees for the first Global Gateways Initiative grant program. This faculty grant competition is designed to support knowledge creation and problem solving through collaborative research and scholarship in the Global Gateway countries of China, India and Brazil.

Alison Crocetta, Department of Art, Barbara Piperata, Department of Anthropology, and Lorrayne Miralha, Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, were awarded through the Brazil Gateway.

Cericola selected as Rising Star by Super Lawyer Magazine

“I don't take this for granted. I'm thankful for clients who trust me and for good mentors. I navigated some tough cases in 2023, and I couldn't have done it on my own,” Cericola said.

In addition to her private practice, Cericola lectures on how to start a legal practice in the United States for LL.M international students who attend the Moritz College of Law Foundations of U.S. Law and Practice summer program. As an alumna, Cericola is supportive of the Alumni Club of Brazil, and helped create the Free Little Library to collect books in English for children in Brazil. She is also the co-founder of the nonprofit Alive in My Heart, which supports families impacted by pregnancy and infant loss by connecting them to each other and to community resources in central Ohio.

Global Perspectives: Emanuel Galdino

"The university embraced me in such a way that I felt at home, comfortable taking classes with undergraduate and graduate students and at ease speaking English without being judged for my non-native errors," Emanuel Galdino said. Galdino is a researcher in science, technology, innovation and sustainability at the University of São Paulo and was a visiting international scholar at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs in 2023.

Brazil Gateway Forum on Climate Change explored agriculture, sustainability

In December, the Brazil Gateway hosted its first Forum on Climate Change. Rattan Lal, distinguished university professor in the School of Environment and Natural Resources, delivered a keynote address sharing his research-backed paradigm that healthy soil leads to healthier people and ecosystems. The forum also featured a panel discussion and Q&As with climate change and environmental experts.
