Of course, we're not talking about
Brazil, the country. Rather, it's Brazil, the movie. You know, the 1985 dystopian science fiction movie that in 2017, was ranked as the 24th best British film ever by a poll of 150 actors, directors, writers, producers and critics for Time Out magazine.
Brazil stars Jonathan Pryce as the main character, (and features Robert De Niro) a man trying to find a woman who appears in his dreams while he is working in a mind-numbing job and living in a micro-apartment. But, the main character's mother (and her friends) are so obsessed with "rejuvenating plastic surgery" that they have absolutely no idea that they look grossly dysmorphic and not beautiful in any sense.
Cut from 1985 to 2018. Here we are more than 30 years later, with Brazil in New York. Everywhere you look, there are overdone lips, boobs, butts, eyelashes, cheeks and eyebrows. Of course beauty norms vary by time, by country and even by region, but we need to review our aesthetic landscape before we forget what natural beauty looks like!
