"Slice of Bread"

A Message from The Pastor's Desk……

Dear friends in Christ,

Blessings to each of you as we approach Holy Week, this time of year when we remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, his last supper with his disciples, his crucifixion, and ultimately, his resurrection. Where do you find yourself this Holy Week? How is it with your soul? There’s been a lot going on in our world and nation the last several months. Sometimes things seem far off and distant and other times they hit a little closer to home. Wherever and however you find yourself this Holy Week, I hope it may be a time of rest, renewal, and peace for you. Holy Week has been described as the culmination of the Christian faith. Faith is about trusting, and in that trust we find peace. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” There’s a lot of faith and trust that goes into holy week…

Trust that washing feet in humble service is the way to live life

Trust that God’s grace is present in bread and wine and really, in all things

Trust that Jesus’ way of non-retaliation, forgiveness and love of enemy is the way we are to go

Trust that even in the sin and violence of the world as portrayed in the crucifixion, that God was there, working all things for good, bringing forth salvation

Trust that injustice and death actually don’t have the final word after all, but that the final word belongs to God, and it is life and life everlasting

As I grow older, my kids help me to stay in touch with the lingo of the times. Among the words/phrases “bussin”, “rizz” and “6-7” is another word/phrase that has taken root in the imaginations and vocabulary of young people of our time and that is, “trust”. Instead of “you can trust me” or “trust me”, within conversations of young people you can hear a simple one word sentence “Trust”. Holy Week’s word to us just might be “trust”.

May the Holy Spirit fan within our hearts the gift of faith, as we look to Jesus who has made God’s love known to us. Trust.

Pr. Patrick

Note From the Council President:

Happy Spring!

Recently I was going through some files and found a report I had handwritten when I was Council President back in 1996. That was 30 years ago! How does time go so fast? So what was happening at Bread of Life back in 1996? That was the year the Saturday evening worship service was added. That is the service Kevin and I still attend.

1996 was also the year we were preparing to refinance our building loan. In order to do that, we needed to reduce our total debt load, so we sold the parsonage. I bet many of you didn’t know that we ever had a church parsonage. It was located on 12th St. SW just a few blocks from the church.

Activities happening that year included the youth group Superbowl Sunday sub sale, women’s spring rummage sale and fall bazaar, men’s group Easter and Christmas breakfasts, and a booth at Hostfest.

Although some very unique things took place in 1996, what hasn’t changed over all these years is the unwavering dedication and the many hands of church members and friends that continue to strengthen our congregation through service. Your time and talents are essential to our mission, transforming faith into action. I encourage you to continue this vital work by joining a committee or activity, ensuring our shared ministry strengthens our impact now and in the future. I'm excited to see what the future holds for Bread of Life!

God’s blessings,

Tracey Lawson

Council President
