"Slice of Bread"

A Message from The Pastor's Desk……

Dear friends in Christ,

I shared this in worship, but I feel like I might as well share it once again. Last week during a weekday I went into the sanctuary to have a look at our volunteer sign up for serving at the Welcome Table for July. As I looked at the sheet on the clipboard I saw that it was completely full with a variety of names ready to serve. It was a moment of thanksgiving for me. I honestly paused for a moment and said “thank you God” as I stopped to appreciate not only those signed up for that particular date but for all who are a part of our church that continue to show up in faith day in and day out.

Many of you know the story of how we as a church got involved with the free Saturday meal at the Welcome Table. We had been serving an occasional meal for the Project Bee shelter and when that stopped the Welcome Table emerged. Since we had been serving that meal we were then invited to serve once a month at the Welcome Table (a free, weekly Saturday meal served at the site of the Lord’s Cupboard Food Pantry, 10:30am, 1901 S Broadway, Ste 2).

Again, this is just one example of the countless ways that our church continues to show up in faith, living into our life together as a church, as we seek to welcome, deepen and serve in faith.

The gospel we will read on the first weekend of August is from Matthew 14:13-21. In the story Jesus withdraws to a deserted place all by himself as he grieves the death of his cousin John. The crowds learn where Jesus is and they follow him there. Upon seeing the crowd we are told that Jesus “had compassion for them and cured their sick” (Matt 13:14). After this Jesus miraculously feeds the 5000.

There are no 5000 fed and there are no sick cured if it had not been for compassion in the heart of Jesus. Following Jesus starts with compassion in our hearts and then flows into some pretty awesome things. I give thanks for the work of Christ among us and all the ways the Spirit continues to fan the flame of the love of God in our hearts.

God’s grace and peace,

Pr. Patrick

Note From the Council President:

Greetings from the Bread of Life Church Council!

How is it August already? Even though summer is winding down, God’s gentle grace stays with us every day.

Please join us for a church and neighborhood cookout at the church pavilion on Tuesday, August 11 from 5:30-7:30pm. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and ice cream will be served. All are welcome!

As has been done for many years, all Bread of Life Ministry Teams get together in August for an evening of fellowship and planning for the upcoming year. The date for this year is August 18 from 5:30-6:30pm. As a reminder, we have the following ministry teams in service at Bread of Life:

  • Community Outreach
  • Congregational Life
  • Faith Formation
  • Property
  • Stewardship
  • Worship & Music

If you have any interest in joining one of the Ministry Teams, please reach out to Pastor Patrick, Pastor Tammy, or me for more information. Serving on a Ministry Team is a great way to learn more about our church and get to know more church members.

With the start of school fast approaching, we offer prayers and support to students, teachers, administrators, and all school staff for a successful return to school. Registration is now open for Wednesday Faith Nights and Sunday Faith Mornings at Bread of Life for youth in preschool - Grade 12. Wednesday Faith Nights begin on September 16 and Sunday Faith Mornings on September 20.

May God’s love refresh your spirit before the busy autumn season begins.
