"Slice of Bread"

A Message from The Pastor's Desk……

Dear friends in Christ,

God provides. This is how Abraham responds to his young son’s question regarding the whereabouts of the sacrificial lamb. “We have the wood and the kindling” the young boy states, “but where is the lamb?” You may recall from the story in Genesis 21 that God has gone to Abraham with a mighty test of faith. It’s a test to see whether or not Abraham will trust God fully even in the most difficult things. Headed up that mountain with the promised son that God gave him in his old age, will he continue to look to God to take care of him? The picture pointed of Abraham in the story is of a person unwavering in faith. The whole time, he’s looking to God to provide. Abraham isn’t a perfect figure. He’s been impatient at times. But here he is found to have unshakable faith. He is lifted up in scripture for his faith (see Hebrews 11 and Romans and he becomes the father of Israel, God’s people. At the heart of being God’s people is this firm faith, looking to God, and trusting that God will take care of us, even in the tests, the trials, and the very hard stuff of life.

We read this story of Abraham during worship on September 13th and 14th. Some of you know this, but on that Sunday, during announcement time we passed around a clipboard for Bread of Life’s next serving opportunity at the Welcome Table Community Meal at the site of the Lord’s Cupboard food pantry in town. The serving opportunity was upcoming that Saturday (9/20) and we only had one of two people signed up. We needed 8 or so others. The sign up clipboard was passed around and then we had our reading from Genesis in which we heard Father Abraham’s words to his son “God will provide”. During communion the chair of our community outreach team, Cody Roteliuk whispered in my ear, “The Welcome Table sign up volunteer sheet is full!” I joyfully announced this at the end of worship and then we had the sending “God in peace, God will provide. Thanks be to God.”

God provides. While the ways in which God provides are certainly varied, we can be assured that one of the ways God provides is through people. God provides for us through others, and God provides for others through us. 130+ people were fed a meal at the Welcome Table on Saturday September 20th through the hands of our volunteer group. I give thanks for ALL the ways God continues to work through you and our congregation as we seek to be Jesus’ hands and feet, providing God’s grace and love to the world.

God’s blessings to you this October!

Pr. Patrick

Notes from the Council President:

Greetings from the BOL Council.

Our last meeting was on September 23rd.  The new sign is in the works for "Grace Hall," and should be up sometime this fall. It will be very busy in the hall this fall, with the Teen Challenge potluck, Confirmation Sunday, Trunk or Treat, Turkey Dinner, and Vendor Show all coming up in October/November.  If you have any other events for the church calendar, please let Hiedi know in the office. The church handbells may make a comeback as a Wednesday night youth activity. If you have interest in helping with that, please let Jeannine Schrum or Pastor Tammy know. The church offerings year to date are higher this year than last year.  The next council meeting is October 21st. If you have questions on anything, please ask a member of the council!
