donatebuttonAs part of CAIR's 2020 General Election "Muslims Vote Campaign," CAIR is encouraging Muslim voters in South Carolina to actively participate in the statewide election and related events throughout the day and make their voices heard.

"Muslims in South Carolina have the chance to play an important role in deciding who will go on to be the final Democratic Party presidential candidate in November," said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw. "Because South Carolina's Democratic Party primary is an open primary, any registered voter -- regardless of party affiliation -- can and should turn out to vote."

  • CAIR Receives Clarification on Hijabs in Census Worker Badge Photos

CAIR had received a report from a Muslim seeking to work on for the census that the identification badge photo requirements stated, "You cannot wear a hat or head covering."

donatebuttonWhen contacted by CAIR for clarification, a census official confirmed that "the photo requirements for the badge allows for an exception for those wearing a hat or head covering for religious purposes" similar to that in fingerprinting guidelines.

The census fingerprinting guideline states: "If you wear a hat or head covering for religious purposes, please bring a signed statement that verifies that the hat or head covering in your photo is part of traditional religious attire worn continuously in public."

"We thank the U.S. Census Bureau for this clarification and hope it sends the message that Americans of all faiths can and should assist in collecting the important data needed to allocate our nation's resources equitably," said CAIR Government Affairs Director Robert McCaw.

  • CAIR, CAIR NY Condemn Michael Bloomberg's 'Doubling-Down' in Defense of His and NYPD's Illegal Spying on Muslims

donatebuttonThe Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, and the New York chapter of CAIR (CAIR-NY) today condemned former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's "doubling-down" in defense of his and the New York Police Department's (NYPD) unconstitutional religious profiling of and mass spying on Muslim communities under his administration. . .

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

"It's shameful that former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg continues to double-down in defense of his and the NYPD's unconstitutional and predatory mass spying on Muslim communities in New York and New Jersey.

"Bloomberg should instead be apologizing for his role in the NYPD's religious profiling and spying on Muslims communities ' just as he apologized for NYPD's discriminatory stop-and-frisk program.

"In the course of six years, the NYPD's now-disbanded and incredibly illegal surveillance program of infiltrating and spying on Muslim communities, houses of worship and student clubs, generated zero criminal leads.

"CAIR believes that in addition to costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, the NYPD's illegal spying program under Bloomberg's leadership damaged the Muslim community's trust in law enforcement and made it difficult for the NYPD to maintain open lines of communication."

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:

"It is pure hypocrisy to issue an apology for illegal racial profiling through Stop and Frisk while simultaneously affirming massive religious and nationality-based surveillance against Muslims.

"Mayor Bloomberg's latest defense of the NYPD's Demographic's Unit demonstrates his continued belief that certain populations are inherently suspicious, warranting law enforcement's targeting of particular communities. Defending these tactics against all American Muslims is immoral, racist and a threat to all marginalized communities."
