Dear Supporters,
Today, the Conservancy — together with RXR Realty — is announcing an exciting new phase in our effort to save and redevelop America’s Flagship, the SS
United States
. RXR is proceeding with its next phase of design development and is embarking on a nation-wide search for an optimal location for the ship. You can read more about these plans in RXR's latest press release, which we've made available in full on
our website
.
These latest efforts build on the extensive initial due diligence RXR began in late 2018, including a successful competition to select a team of architects to begin generating design concepts for the ship's revitalization. RXR has now committed additional resources to this redevelopment process and is also expanding its team to give the Big U the best chance to thrive for generations to come.
As RXR's plans advance, the Conservancy will begin designing and developing a dazzling shipboard museum and visitor center that will celebrate the SS
United States
. The museum will honor the ship's storied history as a pinnacle of technological and artistic achievement and explore broader themes of mid-century design, art, and innovation.
While RXR's renewed commitment offers encouraging news about the ship’s future prospects, locking in a location for the ship is critical to the project's success. We will be providing additional updates as they become available, and we look forward to receiving your input, advice and suggestions as we advance plans for our museum and visitor center. Stay tuned for a member survey that will reach your in-boxes in the coming weeks.
The SS
United States
has waited a long time for this opportunity, and the ship remains proudly afloat because of your support. America's resilient flagship represents the nation's common values, our strengths, and the epic scale of our ambition. And we are now one step closer to saving her.
