Breaking Barriers: Justina Miles Makes Super Bowl Halftime Show

We hope you'll share our enthusiasm about the incredible performance by Justina Miles during this weekend’s Super Bowl. Justina Miles is the first female Deaf performer for the Super Bowl’s halftime show. Her high energy ASL interpretation during Rihanna's 13 minute halftime show has gone viral, with over 2 million views on TikTok!

Not only did Justina's performance demonstrate her extraordinary talent, but it also highlighted the importance of representation and inclusivity. For far too long, members of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community have been underrepresented in mainstream media and entertainment. By showcasing her talent on one of the biggest stages in the world, Justina reminded us all of the importance of diversity, and the value of all voices, including American Sign Language.

While we are seeing some progress, lets hope next year ASL interpretation will be televised during the Halftime show in 2024!

Black History Month

We are inspired by Justina, and as we continue our celebration of Black History Month by honoring those in our community and beyond who not only represent but support the Deaf and DeafBlind community as a whole.

Our school launched a special social media campaign this month to celebrate the incredible contributions of Black people who support our community. From advocates to educators, our posts aim to shed light on the inspiring work of each individual while honoring their collective impact.

Check out our Executive Director Jodi Falk's office door at SFDS! This beautiful design was created by our Administrative Assistant Laquita Harris. Isn't it lovely?

We invite you to join us in this celebration by following us on social media. We'd be so grateful if you could help us share and retweet our posts on social media to help us honor their contributions. Let's work together to create a more inclusive and educated world!

With cheer!
